The powerglide in my 57 ba.has just lost it's appeal (leaking,squeeking,etc.). So now 4 gears sound good but being a tranny moron I cant pick without help. Something without electrons preferably,But, what IS the pick of the litter between 700r4 and the 200r unit or for that matter what unit seems to be a popular choice? Engine is stock 283 with original carter for now,but who knows what the future holds..At present I cant afford too much horsepower just to drive the tranny... Thanks for ANY help given ,,DOC

I don't have any experience with a 700r4 but a friend of mine did his 59 Impala and loves it. His gas mileage went from 12 to 23 on the road.
Thats why Im checking them out. Then find a trans man to do the work:anim_25:

I have always preferred the 200-4R over the 700R4 due to the closer gear ratios of the 200-4r (2.74 first, 1.57 second, 1.00 third, .67 fourth) over the 700 ( 3.06, 1.63, 1.00 .70),
But from experience the 700R4 is easier for most shops to get working correctly in any kind of performance upgrade.

The 200-4R's for the most part were all put in Luxo barges except for the small run that got put in Grand National's and Monte Carlo SS'. The valve body programming of the GN's and SS are really good for a performance car, but the luxo editions were never meant for performance. Most of them had 3.0 or taller gears.

The GN's And SS 200-4R's are $$$ as cores if you can even find them.

Don't recommend wasting your time and money on a PG rebuild, unless you are trying to keep it original for some reason.....Recommend the 700-R4 as well....Four speeds are better than two all day long.

If you want to keep it automatic I like the 700r. Its the most used 4 speed overdrive. Lots of conversion kits out there for them. The 283 will feel like a bbc after adding 2 more gears with a stock rear end. Do you know what rear end gears you have, if it is still stock? Its a very good upgrade, makes these cqars more enjoyable to drive. Performance and looks!

Oh man ,You guys are the best! I had no Idea that such a great group even existed, much less a bunch of folks with the same "personality flaw" as me! I've got to get my little girl some new paint and soft stuff on the inside .The wife never really dug the crushed velvet black and orange look. Go figure!!! PIC's on the way though. thanks again:):)

Hey, im actually right in the middle of a 200-r4 swap now, i was hooling up the tv cable about 20minutes ago before i decided to give up for the night. Hasnt been too rough, hardest part was positioning the tranny and getting it bolted in.
