I have a 1955 Chevy 210 that makes a loud slapping, or knocking noise when it reaches 20-25 mph or so. When the trans shifts up, the car kind of lurches slightly and the noise about goes away. The noise isn't present when the engine is running, and the car is parked or in neutral. My mechanic seems to be kind of stumped - any ideas??:confused0006:

maybe check the motor mounts and see if one is broken or loose. I use this method. Open hood, with engine running and foot ON brake, put into gear and give it some gas with your other foot. see if the engine moves upward on one of the sides.

My transmission expert source says it sounds like the torque converter which is inside the transmission, which translates into big $ to tear into it and rebuild.

Could be your flywheel is cracked (common problem with automatics) and is allowing the torque converter to move forward and back. I've seen some with several cracks in them when removed.
