First off sorry if this is a dumb question! I have a mid 70s sbc 350 mild cam (in my opinion) roller tip rockers (not full roller). Will a short valve cover clear this set up? Can I remove the breather and check the rocker height by just turning over the engine or will the actually go higher at high RPM?
The reason I am asking is the set of valve covers I have now are tall but they cut and welded up the corner to clear the firewall.(Still have front motor mounts) I am wanting to get a set of the Billet Specialties w/Chevrolet script but I dont want to get the tall and have to cut and weld the corner and dont want to waste $$$ on shorts if they wont work. Thanks ahead of time for any input on this!!!!!

Certainly there may be exceptions but roller rockers don't usually need to have a tall valve cover. Tall valve covers are for stud girdles, not roller rockers.

You can't find a set of stock covers to use for a fit check before you buy?

You can get billet spacers that fit under a "short" valve cover. They come in different thickness and will require two sets of gaskets. I used them on my Vicky when I bought a set of re-furbished Cal Customs valve covers at a swap meet. I wanted to use them for that "old school" look. I never had a problem with the Crane roller tip rockers topping out on the valve covers and they would have if I hadn't used them and I had a moderate cam, rather lumpy sounding, and never had an oil leak or seep from the double gaskets...some guys don't like them for that reason. But if you want a particular look or cover it is about the only option if the covers are only offered in "short" versions.

here's a couple of sites

http://www.streetandperformanceelectronics.com/spacermax/

http://www.stefs.com/bandb/products/productpages/valvecoverspacers.htm

and of course you can check out Summit, Jegs, or Speedway

I used Ansens...well made, excellent fit but pricey compared to some others

Hope this helps.

I have the CompCam roller tip rockers and they clear stock valve covers fine.

The gold Cranes always cleared for me.

I don't know how this stuff gets started, I guess when tall valve covers came out there was misleading marketing about what setups need them and there must still be.

valve covers go on one way, if you reverse them the tips will rub and eventually rub through

Some cast alum covers are clearanced on one side for rockers, flip the valve cover over and you can usually see the indentations,,as is the case with the covers I am using. These are tall covers that are clearanced.

I think just a roller tipped rocker should clear just about every cover on the market,,but it's good to check with the manufacturer before purchase.

You can take a look at the valve covers in the pics in my garage. They dont show a good shot of the corner. They just cut off the corner enough to clear the fire wall and welded and polished them back up.The corner that was cut is on the drivers side, passenger side clears.I would post a picture but I havent figured that part out yet.I cant get them to work the way they did in my garage.
