Don't worry! You're okay!
Call your state police, VIN division. They usually send a couple of troopers out and look under the truck to find the VIN on the frame, and then the state will make a tag for the vehicle.

The only way you'll have to worry is if your VIN is already registered someplace (i.e. Someone took your VIN tag and used it). And since you have the actual FRAME of the vehicle, they're in trouble, not you!!

As has been discussed here many times any repro Vin tag is illegal to manufacture or install. Suggest you contact your local DMV and ask about applying for a new state issued VIN. Plan on a state inspection of the vehicle and have all your receipts ready. As stated, should you acquire a repro Vin and install it and the Vin is already registered to another vehicle you may find yourself in the unenviable position of having to explain to your local state police how you came to acquire the car. Seizure of the vehicle is not out of the question or unheard of.

Some guys use out of state title service companies. These are being scrutinized very closely here in NYS and I am hearing now require a 706 inspection by state DMV.

There is a guy that lists repro vin tags on Chicago craigs list . He's out of Canada. I saw a listing on there just a few days ago.
Every time I see the listing I wonder if it's for real or if some government agency is setting up a sting. ???

All states are different, but in Texas, it is NOT illegal to install a new vin tag if the vin # belongs to the car and the car has the proper paper work/title.
The state statue clearly states it is a fellony to change the vin for the purpose of fraud. If your replaceing a lost vin and have the frame number to match the title, it's not fraud.
I don't know about manufactureing them though.
