Vintage 57 Grill Bar Repair Kit

Some of you have seen my car at the nationals and may not have noticed that my grill bar is not quite like a 57 grill bar. The reason for the slightly different look is that I installed an old school repair part that was made by Gem Manufacturing and sold through various auto parts places back in the day. It is an entire panel that installs over the grill bar.

back in the day, you would get backed into, or you would bump something, and you either broke the plastic emblem, or broke the emblem and the lower part of the bar where the emblem fit. So when the later happened you bought one of these panels and installed it over the stock grill bar.

Early versions had the bow tie but that did not last long. Most got a rectangle.

Here is my grill bar with the panel installed.

There was also another version of the panel that incorporated a V in the design.

Then there was a pot metal insert that you could purchase that replaced just the broken emblem. I saw a photo of one many many years ago, probably in the late 70s, but never saw one in person. Well last week one popped up on eBay. NOS in the original box. The price was right so I could not resist. Here is the rarely seen pot metal replacement emblem.

I've had 3-57 Chevys, every single one, all had broken grill bars, this one is being held together by JB weld and some sheet metal.

personal opinion. Big vertical pieces interrupting overall horizontal lines of the car. Same idea as the popular smoothy bumpers on 55s & 56s.
I was the same, when I got my first 57 I hated them, pulled them off day 1, with the one I have now I'm more into the "keeping it stock" mentality, if it came with them then they stay. I noticed something, I look at a lot of old stock photos of 57's, seems like they were put on the 4 door cars a lot more then the 2 door cars, anyone ever notice this?
If the 57 had the original accessory front bumper guards, the bar was never broken. Without the guards, park by ear drivers used up the grilles
I wouldn't say "never", but my first 57 was used as a bumper car, I don't think a snow plow would have helped.

It makes sense Bowers, as 4-dr cars were what was sold to FAMILIES, and were the great majority of chevys sold Then (and now). You've probably seen many more photos of 4-drs than 2 drs from the factory archives. My '57 sedan BA does have all 4 of the large guards, and I have a few NOS parts that I might put on the front of my Nomad (but not sure yet).. :)
I have tons of pics I got off of the internet and not just factory pics, just everyday pics and it just seems like way more of the 4 door cars had them, maybe as a "sensible" family car, people just opted for them more.
