Hi all.

Here is an interesting question...

We don't know whether we have a 265 or 283 engine.
Our problem is the engine number is unreadable and we are assuming that what has been handed down through owners is that it is an original 265 engine.

Apart from the piston size and engine number how else can we determine whether it is a 265 or 283?

Cheers,
56beauville.

Casting numbers for the block are located on the driver's side behind number 7 cylinder on the ledge. However, with the engine in the vehicle this is very hard if not impossible to read. I have had some success using a small mirror. If you are reasonably sure the cylinder heads are original to the engine, you could remove a valve cover. The numbers are cast into the head.

To add a little to what Walt said, I have had good luck from taking a piece if alum. foil and pressing it against the casting numbers he mentioned. You will be surprised how well it forms to the casting numbers.
