Wiring harness grommet

I was putting down sound deadener on the inner firewall so I could start adding the wiring in my 57. I had a heck of a time getting the grommet over the main wiring harness that goes out to the engine compartment. I have the fenders on, but no engine in place yet. Is there a trick to setting that grommet in place in the firewall with the harness in place? I have to remove the hood and left hinge to get to that location, but I don't want to remove a fender after all the time I spent getting the gap right.

bump!
Will....Have you tryed coating the outside of the grommet with some liquid soap?
I haven't David. I'm not sure if you've installed one of these but once you have the harness installed in the grommet, it stiffens the rubber considerably. The groove is about an 8th inch from the front side that needs to seat in the firewall and the "new" rubber is not pliable enough to get a good start in the hole. As a last resort I may need to cut the grommet in half (around the dia.) where the harness seats and the connection should be tight enough to keep it in place. Is this a bad idea? I will try the soap though, but am having my doubts.
