Brad Penn 80/90 GL-4, 1 1/2 Quarts...

Do not use synthetic, I tell all my customers if they use synthetic it voids the warrantee...

Bob, I sent you an E-mail about the shift linkage you had for sale???

Thanks... Crash

According to the "experts" any transmission that has brass parts like syncros, in it should use GL1 80-90W straight mineral gear oil. I special ordered it from NAPA but I have since found that Tractor Supply carries is under Ford transmission fluid, for the old 8n and 9n tractors.

Supposedly the later GL4 and 5 have additives that eat at brass. I know this will open up a can of worms but that is what I was told to use in my saginaw OD transmission. I guess we can do our own research

Nothing wrong with the synthetic, I was only suggesting the cheap stuff because the OP was protesting the price.

I have seen ATF in a Muncie, and that's wrong. On the other hand some of the later model manual transmissions have that as the recommended fluid (T5 and T56 are examples, this is because of the paper friction elements on the synchros).

muncie oil

I had a conversation with Joe Liberty of Liberty Gears some years ago about this subject. He told me that absolutely under no circumstance should you run any other oil in a Muncie other than the factory recommendation of the equivalent of 90 wt. gear oil. He went on to say that in his opinion Pennzoil was the best. Joe Liberty is one of the icons of the transmission business and he is in the business of designing and manufacturing gears.
He also told me that he had made a mental note of the broken muncies that had crossed his bench over the years and more often than not the badly broken boxes had something other than the factory recommended oil in them. He pointed out that the first job of the oil was to provide a cushion for the teeth to ride on and nothing does this like heavy weight gear oil. The lighter weight oil might and I add might provide easier shiting but at the cost of protection.
After hearing this I will never use anything in my Muncies other than Pennzoil

gary!! Is the pennzoil 90wt you recomended /....is it 80-90 wt or just 90 wt... Valvoline makes 80-90-would this be as good or as safe? I live a bit from town.......... wanted to be sure supplier had it first .Advance auto Parts--- bob s

I use Valvoline 80 -90 wt. Have never tried synthetic. Brad Penn , Redline or other. Price is up there for synthetic also. . Mike

Oil for old standard shift transmissions

I was told by one of the smartest men in the country Joe Liberty the founder of Liberty Gears that the old transmissions should have the heaviest oil in them you can get like Pennzoil 85-140. The reason for Pennzoil is that it is a low-ash oil. And the heavy wt oil will give you the best cushion between gears. Synchromesh fluid is for specific uses....not yours, also a synthetic oil offers no protection for your gears compared to Pennzoil 85-140 wt

Ok so I did not see my original reply to this, chalk it off to a Senior moment.
Good luck

Well---- This oil type has changed again. .Good thing! i haven't put it in the trans yet(its all good).I bought wolfshead 85-90 wt gear lube not oil. It says gear lube! on the bottle. NOW we are talking about heavier weight lube yet/ 85-140?????? guess i should locate this, and pour the already purchased 85-90 wt in the third member .right?? bob s~~~~~~~~~~~ glad your on top of this Gary :shakehands:
