What's up with some people these days. I needed some work done on my 56. I contact guys and or go to their place of business. We talk about what I would like done and they tell me " no problem, call me next week or I'll call you "
Well you guess it, they never get back with me or if I call them they say call next week, or they can't do it now.
I just don't understand. When we talk they are all hipped up about doing the work, we are friendly and polite to each other. Why tell me one thing and do another.
The last guy was my forth this year alone. Now I have to wait till next spring, and do this all over again. I am sick and tired of this BS. If I was younger, I would do it myself, like I used to do.
Thanks for letting me vent a little. I know I am not alone when it comes to this issue. :bowtier:

Lot of them don't want to work on any classic . Owners to particular I guess. Mie

It just seems to be the work ethic that is around now. Often you can stumble across an old school tradesperson, and be amazed by their great attitude.

This is also something that is taking place in other businesses as well. I called a HVAC company to have them come over to give me an idea how to best get heat in my garage. Called them no less than three times and not even a courtesy return call to tell me to pound salt. Try getting a tree guy out to trim trees. :)

People are lazy. He probly had someone show up with work at hand or he was overbooked to begain with. And by lazy I don't mean doesn't want the work. Just they aren't good at organization. And doesn't take time to actually schedule it or call people back. Or set a firm time. No excuse, just how people are nowadays. Customer service is dead.

Red,
Wish you were local, I know a guy that runs a vintage-only repair shop and does great work. They are reasonably priced and can fix anything. Have you tried any local car clubs or shows? People can usually recommend someone reliable.

For other services around the house I use Angie's list and have really good luck with it. If they don't show or provide poor service they get dinged on their rating and Angie's list provides them a good flow of business.

There are companies that are serious about providing great service, but sadly they are getting harder to find.

I would trust the BBB wedsite over angies list you have to pay to basically "get a good rating" as its money driven. The more you pay the less bad things show up.
Not my experience. I used a tile contractor that was on Angie's list. This was before I knew about Angie's list. The guy did great work but was horrible at project management.
His Angie's list has over 100 ratings and the reviews showed exactly what I had experienced. People loved his work but hated his project management and slow completion times.

To be honest I haven't looked into the BBB in years until now. I just looked the tile guy up and he had zero information or reviews.

You're not alone. I've experience the same situation with contractors, service companies, etc. Its like you have to PAY them to even come out. How many times do you think you've bonded with someone and then you never hear from them? Times have sure changed.

Fact is most people are lazy. They want your money but begrudgingly do not want to work to earn it. Lies, postponements, poor work quality is what we usually get. They want more money than what their substandard effort is worth. A real pity.

I am involved with my local SDA Church. WE recently had a fire inspection. It was our first after several years of remodeling a former daycare building. All went well, as I was also heavily involved with the hands on remodeling.

The only things that needed looking into were fire extinguishers and emergency lighting. I called a company and they sent some one out to replace all the old extinguishers. I had another contact me about the emergency lighting. He went on and on about how he would have to come out to ID our equipment, then if he did not have all the light bulbs and batteries with him he would have to make a second trip. Each trip was 45.00 and 69.95 per hour plus batteries that could range from 10.00 for the smalls to 35.00 for the larger ones. I thanked him for his time and on Monday, when I was there I removed some sample batteries. All the bulbs are LED's on printed boards. I checked the battery prices on line, and they rang from $2-4.00 for the smalls and $6-10.00 for the large. Needless to say I have ordered all I need for less then 50.00 and no trip charges or large labor bill. If the guys attitude on the phone had been better I would have just had him meet me there and not mess with it. But it just burns me that they want to jerk ya around, as if to say they can.....so you must.......pay.

I work 80 hour weeks and I can still find the time to handle this for my Church.

a friend of mine has a small shop and they do anything to the 55-57 chevys and do great work. he needs acouple more guys but finding someone that wants to work or do it right is the problem.he is building a 60 impala for a guy out of calf. he was finishing up a 55 chevy convertible today and acouple of weeks ago had a 56 t bird doing engine work and putting a new top on it.he is pickey about his work and that keeps him busy.he is getting ready to put together a 49 chevy coupe with a big block .

Where are you in michigan: I use MRT in plymouth mi. On the high side but live up to promise dates. Also wrenchers in NOVI. There is also a body shop in Romulus that is reasonable and quick turn around.

Thanks topdog, I live in the Clarkston area. I want to find a local guy because if I go to other areas I would want to trailer the 56 and I do not have a trailer or something to pull it. Call me crazy but that's the way I am. I am hoping the last guy I talked to can do it next early spring. He lives only about 5 miles from me.
It's not like I want a full restoration, I only want the front suspension updated with all new bushings, ball joints and new bushings on the upper and lower A arms.:bowtier:

The issue with the BBB is a business needs to pay a fee to them to be a member. They are a private non-profit company that survives on the good will of their members. The social websites are what people use today to look up feedback on contractors.
classic car work is used as fill in work at most body shops unless it's their sole business. Insurance work pays the bills. If you want your work done quickly find a classic car shop.
