Hi everyone,

just wondering what or where is there a code on a bel air that designates
it as a convertible? Is there anyway to tell from the VIN #? If not what
is to stop someone from just chopping a top off and claiming its a true
convertible??

thanks,
neal

Welcome to the site Neal. the VIN# won`t reveal it. But the trim code tag on the firewall should show it as a convertible.

Neal, there is a trim tag in the engine compartment that will have the body style on it with a 4 digit code, possibly followed by a letter. That's assuming someone didn't chop off the original trim tag along with the original roof and replace it with the 'matching' one.

1) Tri-fives had one of two windshields, one for the pillared cars and one for the hardtops. The convertible had the hardtop style windshield.

2) Check the frame underneath and see if it has the big "X" brace under the floorboards unique to convertibles.

3) Since I'm not around them, I'd have to get a friend (or rent a friend) who has a convertible to drive me to the inspection site and compare the folding top and sheet metal detail of his car with the car in question.

4) It is possible to counterfeit one, but if the seller did a good enough job so that I couldn't detect it with the above steps, and he followed craig32's trim tag instructions, it would be close enough for me, because he essentially rebuilt a wrecked convertible with a donor car anyway

Neal,

If a fella was to cut the top on a hard top and add an x frame to it, there is also an extra body mount brace behind the wheels on the outside that is not on any other frame. The body mount bolt holes on a conv frame are 3/4" where as all other holes are 1 5/16". If a fella were to make a trim tag new, that would be a red flag, the body style is 1067DTX on all conv. Restoration shops are building conv out of hard tops as the title doesn't always designate it as a conv. only 2 DR in some states. They still have to have the original trim tag on the firewall, if it's shiny new then I would question if it's really a conv. The whole point is as 2x4 said it's possible to build a conv out of a hardtop if you've got the trim tag 1067DTX and have a frame. There is one thing that is different on a conv. on the floor pans. The floor pan in the rear of a conv only has 3 indents in the floor as all others are 4. The conv floors there selling are really hardtops with the correct braces, but the rear floor pans are hardtops. I've got three convertibles in my garage, and one of those brand new floors they sell as conv with hardtop rear floor pans. The VIN # would have to designate a belair which is C, B was for 210 model belairs, I think. Hope this helps, Bob H
