Hi all. New guy here with a noob question. I’m looking at a 1955 bel air convertible. Now, I was under the impression that all vin tags were welded on horizontally. The car I’m looking at has the vin vertical. The owner says he’s owned the car for over 20 years and swears it’s factory. He also said the vin tags came either horizontally or vertically depending on the plant the car came from. I notice that all cars that have the vin tag horizontal also have two little vertical holes that looks like it would match a vin tag. Any help is highly appreciated thanks.

could have been removed for painting and reattached after. title is what is very important too. :tu

I've looked at a bunch of pictures of 1957 Belair 2 DHTPs vin tags on the internet and it seems they are mounted all over the place. The ones that are in the "correct" place are what seems to be close to the correct place and not precisely mounted. I think the guy on the assembly line was not concerned about measuring the spot too closely. Also it looks like all of the tags that appear to be spot welded are mounted over paint. Everything I know about welding says that's a no no, I guess a very small, hot spot weld could penetrate a thin layer of paint and stick. Maybe that's why so many have multiple welds.

That’s what I thought. This guy says he bought the car from barret Jackson 23 years ago and he has the paperwork to prove it. Why would barret Jackson sell a car with a tampered vin tag?
Lots of 'fake cars' were sold thru B-J auctions; most by 'buddies' of the BJ duo.. Reggie Jackson was one of their buddies who ran fake cars thru their auction...
