I am losing my mind trying to pick a long water pump for my Chevy 350. I thought it might be nice to "upgrade" to an aluminum one. I have a budget of around $100.

I used to love ordering from Summit and Jeg's, but their brands have bad reviews, either leaks from the back, or, poor construction/casting.

I probably don't *need* an aluminum one, just thought the upgrade would be cool. I had to talk myself out of a quiet Pete Jackson gear drive already (I keep reading they fail too), I'm trying not to have to sacrifice on the pump, too!

Thanks!

Probably little over 100 bucks , but weiand action plus gets my vote. Very sturdy pump. Water pump is pretty important part in engine, still many times overlooked...guys are putting very expensive heads and forged pistons and then put some chinese crap pump on it. Water circulation in sbc is not so good that you should make it even worse with bad pump.

I appreciate that, thanks, Finn! I'll see what they're running. I know Weiand's a good name, and the engine already has a Weiand intake on it. Didn't know they did pumps, too. :)

IMO the best budget aftermarket pump is the Stewart stage 1. It is cast iron.

Edelbrock, Stewart, and Moroso aluminum pumps are all good pumps, obviously some are pretty expensive.

The Weiand aluminum pump is not a heavy duty pump.

An 86-up pump will fit an early engine with one exception. True Vortec pumps don't have the bypass hole that's present below the outlet on the passenger side. Goes for true Vortec blocks too. So you will have a leak there.

Also a true Vortec water pump (96-up) is reverse rotation and has a different hub for mounting the fan and pulley than other SB water pumps. Many 86-up engines also use a reverse rotation water pump (i.e., those with factor serpentine belt drives).

Now, having said all that, a crate engine might have a non-Vortec block and a standard rotation water pump, along with Vortec heads.

That is what was already on the 350 that is going into the truck. It's not meant to be numbers-matching to '57, I'm just trying to get her back on the road. The pulleys on the engine also align to the long pump setup as-is.
That answers that question perfectly.
