Hey guys, stock 283 and cast glide.
Just wondering if anyone has and tips or pointers. IF and how to remove the glide with the motor still in the car. Also how to get to the top bellhousing bolts as i can not sight them easily.

Thanks

Have a pic of the bay for your troubles

I would either pull the distributor or at the very least remove the cap & rotor to begin with as you will need to lower the rear of the transmission to get to the top bolts. You have to remove the torque converter bolts first which you access through the small plate next to the starter. With a remote starter button you can bump the engine around to get all the converter bolts. There are two sets of bolts the ones that are pretty much in a circle are the first ones you remove once the converter bolts are out.Of course you need to remove the transmission mounts from the transmission & frame horns so the transmission can be lowered.Once you have lowered the rear of the transmission enough to be able to remove the bell housing bolts again the set in a circle you need to support the rear of the engine with a jack or jack stands or what I do is take a Good ratchet strap wrap the ends round the frame on both sides & under the rear portion of the oil pan & ratchet it up really tight & it helps to put a piece of wood between the pan & the strap.Make sure your engine mounts are good before taking stuff loose especially if you have only the original front mounts. Then be really careful lowering the transmission down it's heavy & awkward I'd recommend renting or borrowing a transmission jack makes thing's alot easier. If you are reinstalling the cast iron glide that's it.If you are swapping to a different style transmission then you need to remove the starter & you'll need a different block mounted starter or different starter nose provided it's a new enough engine block that has provisions for a block mounted starter. Then remove the flywheel you can't use it with Any other style transmission.Lastly you can remove the adapter plate that bolts to the block.Ofcourse you need to remove the shift linkage & throttle linkage also. Long winded & maybe more than you needed.Make sure you fan doesn't hit your radiator.

there is an access panel inside the car on the tunnel to allow you to reach the upper bolts. Be very careful as people have been badly hurt or killed doing this job. I personally know of one. Use the transmission jack as already suggested.

Most tool rental places have transmission jacks well worth the cost for ease & safety of removal & installation When I was 16 I removed & installed a cast iron glide in my 57 without a jack.Young strong & stupid.

I've went in and out with cast iron PG's using nothing but a floor jack so many times I couldn't begin to count them. I've never used a transmission jack because I don't have one...

PS. Even the later (and lighter) PG's are CAST, just cast in aluminum rather than cast iron.. :)

I have too along with many other types of transmissions & anything with a flat bottomed pan isn't hard, balancing a iron glide a different animal but sure it can be done just better & safer with a trans jack where you can strap it down & stay the hell out of the way as it's coming down.I dropped a 4l80 off my trans jack with the car up on my lift when the jack leaked off almost broke my leg when I was stupid enough to try and save it luckily only destroyed the pan & a chunk out of the epoxy on the floor.

Yes, I can't recall pulling/installing an early cast iron PG in probably the last 20 yrs.. but I have done TH400 and TH350 in that time (most recent 3 months ago) using nothing but a floor jack with the car on jack stands. .. and put it back in a month later the same way... balanced on my floor jack... and that last install 2 months ago was only a week before a heart cath and stent install in my main coronary artery... 99% blocked when doing the pull/install...
