I just purchased a new gas tank for my 56 wagon. Does anyone know how to get the old tank out. It does not fit between the spare tire well and the rear end.
Thanks for the help.

I tried to fight it on my '57 wagon, but there was no way around it. If it's similar to my wagon, you have to drop the rear end. Not a big deal though-support the frame with jackstands, and, with the floorjack under the differential, unbolt the shocks at the axle, remove the spring shackle bolts, and drop the rearend a couple of inches and your home free. I spent more time whining to myself about having to drop the axle than the actual process:mad:. lol.
Hope this helps
Jay.

Wagon gas tank

Thanks for the help. I can't get the bolt out of the rear shackels. I can get the nuts and the inside plate off but then I'm stuck. Is there a trick to getting the bolts out?

Woops. Sorry. Thanks chevynut for the correction. If you pry the outer shackle off and then get an even bigger pry bar to pry the leaf spring (with the bar against the frame) away from the shackle, THEN the rearend can drop down. If they are original spring bushings, they'll be seized to the bolt and will fall out as dust in your face-it can be tough. You might plan on getting new bushings and most of the time the rusted remains left on the shackle bolts can be removed with a hammer and chisel.

I've managed to do this in the past in my Nomad without dropping the rearend. I removed the rear wheels then removed the axle u bolts and slid the rear end as far forward as possible, and there is enough room to get the tank out & in.

Nomad tank

We couldn't get the tank out of my '56, but fortunately our engine and trans/driveshaft were out so we just unbolted the front of the springs and lowered the rear end and the tank came out easily. Lot of work though if your drivetrain is still in place.
