I recently inherited a 1955 cameo from my great grandfather. It's been sitting in his barn for the last 30 years, is there an easy way to tell if its an original numbers matching engine/ tranny? I have been scouring the forums and google for hours and not having much luck. It looks like the date code is stamped behind the starter.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, here's some pictures

Welcome! What a great inheritance. From the looks of things, I would just about bet that is the original motor and trans. Nothing looks changed on that truck! You are a lucky man! :congrats::congrats:

The only way to tell is to check all of the casting #'s

:hello: hi ya and welcome. good to have you here. looks all original to me. check eng block number for starts. you also have family members that could tell you alot about it too. you will learn more about it as you get it running. just enjoy it and a great way to remember your grandad.

That's a helluva nice truck. Great that it was inside. It's very possibly orig but lots of things could have happened in 56 years. It doesn't really matter, the body is nice and intact, being able to say it's a real Cameo is the most important aspect. It'll be worth more with a V8 if you plan on going that route, Very nice project.:tu

nice

looks original to me i wish i had a second one in that condition mine is so nice that some times i worry about dents and scatches !!every body should have 2 of there favorites lol!!!:anim_25:

I tried looking up the casting #'s and not having a lot of luck. I'm not real familiar with older vehicles. There's a cast # on the head, on the drivers side of the valve cover. It's 3835913. This didn't show up on the stove bolt forums or in any of the manuals I could find. The date code appears to be under the starter and completely unreadable. I was under the impression that if it was a matching numbers motor it would be better to rebuild it and leave it completely stock. The motor is seized and I spent a week filling the spark plug holes with various chemical to try to break it free. My wife told me enough already( apparently the smell was seeping into the house) my plan is to media blast it and put it back to stock paint. Btw anybody have a set of 55 belair/cameo full wheel covers laying around? That seems to be the only original piece I'm missing. The back chrome chevy emblem is also missing something, is it supposed to be red in the center?
