If you do chop the frame you might want to just add a little radius to those cuts, minor detail but it does spread the load a little.

Cool project. Seems I have some competition for rustiest project, but I think you're still a distant second!

Are GMC doors and beds the same as Chevy? I know the tailgate is badged with GMC but is the rest the same? There is a 56 GMC roller for sale locally that I part out to get the bed, seat and better doors.

Daleo, according to the LMC Catalog, those parts are interchangeable along with many others. I use the LMC Catalog as a "mini" Assembly Manual most of the time and it's well worth having even if you aren't ready to buy anything yet.

I have the downloaded PDf version and it just says 55-59 so I wanted to make sure. I know sometimes the trim or details may be different.

Wow Tim I can't believe I have missed this thread!!!

Awesome find. I bet you will have the truck going in no time, especially with the parts you already have. Time for my questions!

1. Are you planning to go gloss or matte paint?
2. Whitewalls or blackwalls?
3. Two tone or all one color?
4. Keeping her 8 lug?

Can't wait to see further progress. I sure do wish I could come over and help out! :D

You will find that painting is much easier than you think. With all the parts that you have sprayed with a rattle can you will find working with a gun very pleasurable.

  1. Single stage in a Oriental Green close to the picture shown below. Learned to weld so time to learn how to paint I guess.
  2. Blackwalls 245/75R16 and similar to below with Bombay Ivory rims and hubcaps
  3. Two tone with Bombay Ivory on top (both colors are 57)
  4. 8 lug yes with stock type rims for now with drums and a booster

Ya, trim is different, some of the hoods are different, obviously badgering is different, dash & gauges and a few other odds & ends, but the catalog usually specifies which are and are not interchangeable. I'm waiting on a package from them right now hoping I can have my '57 on the road by the end of this weekend. Wish I had a big stock pile of parts laying around like some do, but one way or the other, I'll get it done. ;-)

If I'm not mistaken, the bed was pretty much the same from '56 to '66
You might be right, my LMC cataloug only cover '48 - '59, or so. My CCP covers '48 - Current, I'll check it when I get home tonight.

On the Stepside models, Front Bed Panels are interchangeable on 1947 thru 1987. On Fleetside models, 1958 thru 1991.

On Short Bed Stepside and Long Bed Stepside respectively, the side panels are 1947 thru 1953, 1954 & 1955 and 1955 thru 1959 --- according to Classic Insustries Parts & Accessories Catalog 1947 - 2008 (T213E). No explanation for the dual listing of 1955.

In 1955 they had a mid-year change to the new style. First series was the old style and second series, the change about half way through the year, was the 55-59 style.

The wife went to the DMV and checked on what we need to get this truck registered. I need to get it assembled, weighed and the VIN inspected. Gonna try and throw it together, not running of course, over the next two weeks so I can get the title done.

I have a 265 engine another member gave me and just found a stock 57' SM420 gear box I think I can attach to the manual bell housing #3733365 I already have. Anyone know where I can find a floor stick shift lever? I have looked at CCI, LMC and Orange and have not found anything. Also looked on Ebay. Nothing. They made 342,612 of these things so shouldn't there be a boat load of these floating around somewhere?

I also found a stock column/box for $100 and think I can bolt it right in when I get it. I found a steering wheel online for $60 and placed a bid but also had to search high and low to find the stock column bracket. Are original items really this hard to find?

I also checked on the frame and the V8 should fit fine with the repop mounts. The rear end also seems to be solid although I am not used to working on a floating 8-lug.

Now if I can just find a decent longbed locally I would have a complete looking truck for the scales.

Just to let you know I had mine weighed with no glass and just slapped together. Engine, trans and sheetmetal. No radiator, gastank and zero fluids. It all worked out fine.
Mine will be about the same as yours if I can find a driver side door. The one that came with the truck is shot. I also found out the manual trans I was going to buy does not have the stick shift so I am going to see if I can use the passenger PG I have as temporary ballast!
