I think its a government accounting tag. the government puts tags on all thier stuff to account for the property. Much like alot of schools and companies put tags on thier stuff for accounting pourposes. Was this tag on a car? do any of the numbers match the vin ?...Did the car also have a vin tag?

Government vechiles did have the vin tags. I thought the tag he showed was in addition to the body and vin tag. the government deliverys were not however 4 dr cars.
GM never offered 4 dr. delivery`s, but they did offer 4 dr. model 150`s like the tag shows.

This tag was a common type tag that was attached to every piece of equipment the military used. The Military had a standard stock catalog that listed everything the military purchased for use.

Note that the VIN number is stamped into the tag. For most equipment it would have had a UNIQUE number assigned to it that started with #1.

Tags like this were even on Navel Boats and Air Force Planes.

Just how the military kept track of items they purchased.

Once a year we had to verify we still had equipment assigned to us....inventory control.
