Dumb and dumber strikes again

Well I got a good laugh today, unfortunately it was at me. I had backed the 57 out of the garage to the sloped driveway to burp the engine/radiator due to temperature fluctuations. I took the cap off and sat it on the radiator. I started the car and heard a noise from the engine area. Got out and looked and the radiator cap was gone:confused0006: Since I was now on a slope the cap must have slid off the radiator. I looked under the car, around the car and in all the places it might have fallen. My son came out and helped me look, I was mystified where a shinny chrome car could have gone:roll eyes:

I then began messing with some spark plug wires and low behold there was the cap sitting back by the distributor :sign0020:

Daleo thanks for the diagram that's makes it easy to see what went wrong:sign0020: the weird thing is the cap wasn't even marked up, I'm thinking it actually only hit the belt and not the fan.

Just last week my stepson got home, said the Kia minivan died as he was pulling in the drive, the radio and dash lights had gone out before that. Charged up the battery, it started, but wasn't charging. So I drove 20 miles to get a $135 alternator, started changing it yesterday, after looking online to find out it's a 3 hour chore. As I'm taking off the 3rd easily accessible bolt, I notice there's no belt on it. DOH!!! No wonder it wasn't charging. And it was still a PITA to change the belt. :stupid: :banghead:

The reason most of us don't talk about this stuff is that it happens several time a week.

It's not that we don't want to talk about it, but when it's routine it's not remarkable. It's part of your life like making a pot of coffee in the morning.

I'm still looking for the taillight bezel screw that I dropped last week.

Jim I had seen those posts a while back and what you guys did. It does have the vortex heads, but none of the other stuff. I had the water neck off replacing a gasket the other day and wanted to make sure when I filled it that I didn't have a bubble trapped. I have a Stewert thermostat with the holes in it so water gets by without it being open. As a matter of fact it takes forever to get hot and runs a bit cool on the open road.

Randy, I too run a Stewart high flow thermostat, but without holes. Before I added a coolant bypass line to my Vortec SBC I tried the Stewart with holes. That helped temp fluctuations some, but I could not get above 150 degrees at freeway speeds when ouside temp was 60 -70 degrees. I believe my bypass solultion helped a lot...I pretty much run constant 180 no matter what speed or what outside temperature.

Jim I could kill you:sign0020: I just went back and reread that huge thread on the bypass, over an hour of reading:rolleyes: It is very good and does highlight my symptoms of fluctuation and not running hot enough on cool days because of the drilled thermostat. I guess I will have to figure a way to add the bypass, I'm short of access points on both the manifold and water pump though. I'm already using the water neck spacer for my temp and fan senders.
