I think it is hard to beat a crate engine from some place like summit racing.

350 Crate Motor

Here is a link to a GM Goodwrench 350 crate motor. I installed one of these in my 56 Nomad last year and finished up the crate motor with period correct engine components. You will not find a more economical crate motor that will meet your casual cruising needs. Are you looking for a ready to run (Carb to oil pan) or a long block?

If you go other than crate you need to consider the cost of machining and assembly.

You have plenty of options as well rebuilding what you have.

Reliability, Value for money you can't go past the 350 crate motor.
You can pretty it up with what you like as far as manifolds, rocket covers, air cleaners and chrome parts go.

Very helpful. I'm still learning about engine types. Is this a 350 small block that's a V6 or V8? Would I have to go with a bigger exhaust system and muffler than the stock?

350 is a V8. It is the same physical size as all Gen 1 Chevrolet V8's. The stock 2 inch exhaust can be used, or it can be increased to 2 1/2 inches.

Ok good to know. I'm putting in a new transmission 200-4R which supposedly doesn't lock up when in a higher gear. I was told this was the best to keep RPM's low at highway speeds and will preserve engine life over time. Thanks for all the info.

Unless you plan on changing the cam and heads if you buy the 290 hp version, buy the 260 hp one it will run much better with no changes necessary

Yes, I believe the 200-4R trans gives 200-400HP. You said 26OHP trans is best so that should fall right into that right?

I recommend that you get the engine I identified in my previous post #3. Check out the attached build thread there too, so you can see the engine being assembled from a long block to a complete ready to run engine.

I take that as that the 'converter' doesn't lock up in high gear. If that's right it would seem that would be counter-productive at keeping the RPM's low at highway speed since the converters do slip some without being locked up solid.

I like the 350 engine. they will go right back where any small block has been. when I put a 350 in my first car which was a 56 we used the factory manifolds. Worked out great.

A crate 350 is the path to the least aggravation. But consider having yours rebuilt and keep the car original it will be worth more in the long run

I saw your post from last year, what did you end up going with? I am just starting my engine swap and this too will be a daily driver, but want to add power stearing, AC and more modern than my other orignal 57. No one will drive my 1st 57 because is all original and we are in central Texas (HOT).

I have looked at Danchuck, JEgs and summitracing and just dont see a replacement that is basic enough to use but with upgrades for what I am adding.
