Just picked up my '57.

I need to install the hood hinges. Obviously, it mounts to the firewall and hood.

My question is:

Does it attach anywhere else? It looks like it should attach under each fender as well, however, there aren't any mounts for it.

Pics will help.

Thanks

Sinister, there is a little clip bracket that bolts to the hinge and pinches the lower edge of the fender to locate the hinge and keep it from being somewhat loose or flexible if you don't use it.

As a side note, if you are checking gaps and such as you put the hood on, I just found out that having the cowl seal in place helped to hold the hood up in place and made making fit adjustments much better. I did it without the cowl seal there and couldn't figure out why the hood would drop down. then the light bulb.

Sorry I don't have a picture of the clip.... also some guys have fabbed their own hockey stick like bracket to do away with using the little clip.... one of the guys will post a pic of them I'm sure.... the little clip has a tendency to deform the edge of the fender just a little bit.

Good luck

Don't forget to remove the latch assembly and lay a towel(s) across the cowl so when to remove/replace the hood and realign it you wont scratch the paint....

Buy some beer and have two or three friends over to help......

Removing/replacing the hood hinge springs is a trick too.... just ask if you need help that that as well

Wow!!!

You guys are fast. :shakehands::shakehands:

It's bracket is OEM. I kinda thought that bracket might "clip on", but I wanted to make sure. Thanks. Any yes, I'll use the cowl trick.

Any tips you guys have on installing the springs will be greatly appreciated.

I'm about as green as it gets with all this stuff, so I'm sure I'll be here often. :sign0020::sign0020:

Thank you very much....

Oh... I'm going for a pro street look.

Here's the link to the "hockey stick" part Des made.
I would do this if not doing a total Original restore.

Yep, that's what we did and it looks a treat. Just make sure that the visible part of the hockey stick is the same outline as the standard clamp and it will not be noticeable.

And yes, this was to an original restoration project, which is why we worked hard to make it invisible.

The way I do it is with washers:
Here's a video of the easy way.

I did try the washer trick first on my 57 BA and didn't have much luck... if you do try this method add a string through the washers once they are placed on the spring to keep them from falling everywhere......

In my opinion the conduit tool worked best....

You guys rock!!! :congrats:

Thanks
A 57 hinge can't be opened as far a s 55/56 hinge like in the video. With a 57 hinge wide open, the spring still won't slip over the hook on the hinge. About 9 or 10 washers have to be added to increase the length enough to hook it on the hinge. Put one loop of the spring in a vise and bend it away from you and insert the washers in the open loops, then turn it around in the vise and repeat.
I use a stud (bolt with the head cut off) in the front hood-to-hinge bolt when setting the hood on the hinge. Then the hood won't slide back into the cowl and the other bolt hole is aligned so you can put the rear bolt in the hinge. The rear bolt will support the hood until you remove the stud and install the second bolt.
