Wasn't sure where to post this so I'll ask here. Recently my hood has been popping up and catching on the safety hook while driving. This usually happens if I just close the hood...if I "slam" it down hard it never pops up. I've looked at tried the procedures in the shop manual to no avail. The latch is a re-pop if that is any help.

Any suggestions or tips on adjusting the latch???

Thanks,
Gary

56 Hood Latch

This is NOT a solution to the problem, but a question. I am new to this group, and have not figured out how to properly opost a question. I have a similar problem with my 56 hood lacth. This is replacement hood w/latch, however I too am unable to make the hood go past the safety hook. tried moving the striker plate (way too many times.). It seems that the cam on the left (facing fron of hood will not rfetract enough to let the hood fall further. I can wire (hay) the cam over, then the hood will drop down. What the heck am I missing.

Thanks

I recently removed my hood lock plate because I was installing a new radiator and I found two spacers, actually 1/4 inch nuts, .225 thick, under the hood lock plate, apparently put there previously to solve the problem you are talking about.

had the same problem, found that the release latch was catching the grill and not going into the lock position. a slight adjustment to the latch (bend it outwards) did the trick.

Hood latch

The problem that I have with my hood is when it is latched I can move it up and down a 1/4 inch. When it is down it lines up good with the fenders. When going down the road it floats up and moves up and down. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to adjust the latch to remove this problem?

Is the latch plate as far to the drivers side as it will go and still have a small clearance between it and the post of the latch. Is there excessive clearance at #3 in the picture?

Latch

The problem is almost always the striker plate, either it's beat up or adjusted wrong. You just have to play with it and if it's really beat up, replace it.

Third question in the same post. I'm guessing the questions from 2011 and 2013 have been resolved.

To the latest questioner, there is little you can do with the position of the latch plate, but that isn't the problem anyway. When your latch is down and locked there is too much vertical play. To remove that play, you have to move the latch UP in the hood. You can do that by putting shims between the latch and the plate it mount to on the hood. That's between the hood reinforcement and the lock assembly in this diagram.

Is your latch plate the original one or an aftermarket one? I replaced my original with one of the chrome plated aftermarket plates and mine started the loose up and down, wouldn`t catch solid thing. Got rid of the chromed one and went back to my original plate and problem solved.

acardon, thanks for answering.

After removing the latch, and going out back and getting one from a parts car I finally got it through my head and reinstalled in the car. My hood still moved up and down.

I was scratching my bald head, and grabbed the curved the bracket the latch bolts to, and it was just flopping around.

The four little screws that hold it to the cross brace were completely missing.

Latch works great now.

I have heard that the Re-pop latches have that problem. How many springs are on your latch, mine has 3. 1 big in the front and 2 small on the back. You can look online to see pictures of a factory latch. I prefer a factory latch. You can find them on eBay or swapmeet .

Hood not tight to the rubbers

I have tried every thing that I can think of and read all the post dealing with the hood latch. When the hood is closed the hood can be moved up and down. So it never fits correctly. What can I do to tighten the sloppy hood?

Do you have the bumpers on the front corners of the hood?

I always just “drop“ the hood down and it latches. Initially I had issue as well. Also very trying to adjust glove compartment lid and trunk lid to get them to latch properly.

I moved my striker plate to the right when standing in front of vehicle and problem fixed. I have had the car for 10 years and it has been an on again off again issue. Right now everything is good

OL55 sells an inside release type hood latch that ends that problem, worried and all.
