So without intention, I picked up this toolbox that is almost an exact match to my '57. I got on the tool truck like any other day, and there she was. Just staring right back at me. Knowing I only had $200 left on my bill, I had some thinking to do. So there I was, unloading it into the garage. 😂

Nice box!!!! I've only owned 4 tool boxes in my life time. Started out with a used Craftsman I bought for I think maybe 75 bucks. After I got out of the service I went to work for our local IH dealer in 1978. Bought my 1st snap-on box from Harry Wierzba the Snap On dealer. He was just starting selling Snap On. He was my Snap On man from then until 2004. I upgraded tool boxes twice with him over the years until he quit Snap On and moved back to Wisconsin to take care of his ailing mother. The new snap on guy that replaced him never had anything on his truck and was randomly stopping by on Fridays. I finally hooked up with Cornwell and he was regular as clock work. My present box is a lime green Cornwell box, 1 pc, no more stacked boxes. Have been very pleased with it.

I thank you! I have multiple boxes. I'm terrible. My big box is at work. That one really hurt. And yes, I have heard of Snap on dealers not showing up, never having anything, don't warranty stuff etc. and never once believed any of it because I've had such a wonderful experience with my dealer. UNTIL the company I was working for was slowly turning into a used car lot. And we all know what kind of work and shams go along with that. Not me. So I left and stayed somewhere for a year and the Snap on experience was absolutely HORRIBLE. I quit buying Snap on while there. Finally after dealing with that for a year, I found A GREAT JOB doing exactly what I do. This place was in my old dealers route. Man I was so spoiled with how great he was! So yes, I can now sympathize with what people say about some dealers. But things like this unintended purchase happens when actually have things on your truck! (And are peopley!)
 
I only have one that was an investment. Years ago when Snap On came out with the limited Edition 57 BelAir tool box, my dealer showed it to me.
At 7500.00 it was way out of my needs. I could afford it, but didn't see that as a wise investment. Several years later, same tool man showed up
on his weekly stop and had the very same box on his truck. Great condition! This time the price was 3500.00 He unloaded it. He gave me a new
cover for it as part of the deal.
My weekly payment went from $25 to $75.00 and I have never regretted it. I have turned down several serious offers for 5K for it. It has
always been a business expense and write off.......but you got to have the $$$ before you can write it off......LOL

One Snap On logo was broken, but I replaced that with this NOS 50's Powerglide script I found at a
swap meet for 10.00

I later bought the 57 convertible in matching color.......as an investment. When the market was at it's peak, I
sold the 57 convertible for 4 times my investment!

One of the guys that worked for me at the last Chevy dealership bought one of those boxes very nice box.I have had some really good Snap On dealers & some poor ones.A lot of them start really good with a truck full of tools to sell.The ones that replaced tools as the sold them but when you start seeing the tools on the truck start decreasing the guy wasn't going to be around long.Had a young guy that became a good friend worked for me later became a Snap on dealer & did really good for several years then they changed his area & he was smart enough to get out before getting financially hurt.Sadly we lost him a few years ago to cancer much too young.

100%. Most dealers I've seen come and go we're Mac. I never would buy from them. You never knew when you'd see them again. And much like you said, if there isn't new stuff and / or the dealer wasn't warrantying things that should be etc, they're in trouble. They get put on "hold" and cannot purchase anything themselves. In fact the Snap on guy I referred to that stunk, he went under about two months after I left. On an active truck, there is always new deals / sales every week. You can normally see the enthusiasm in your dealer declines as well. It's not as easy as some think. Fortunately for me (now again) my Snap on guy is (I believe) 3rd or 4th on the East Coast. He carries a very good reputation. And a very good dealer. Boy could sell ice to an Eskimo! And so sorry for your loss. Always sad to hear.

and one rule is ----never pay off completely LOL---they have no incentive to come back unless you owe them 🤣

That's terrible. Gives a bad name to the good ones.

The thing I hate most about tool guys is the way some over sell young mechanics just starting out.I would do my best to try & talk the new guys out of getting them selfs deep in debt to the tool man especially for a big fancy box but most the time they wouldn't listen.They buy the big box & didn't have crap for tools.Fill a cheaper or used box with tools till you don't have room then think about a slightly larger box till that one's filled.You can buy some decent useable tools without the high $ names to begin with. I do think no one makes better wrenches than Snap on sure glad I bought mine 50+ years ago.

once they get that way it's a pain when you have a broken tool. My shop was attached to a NAPA store and I have many NAPA sockets I had to buy just to get by until I could run down the Snap On dealer.
You got that right. Don't think we don't purchase from the local auto parts stores and yes, Harbour Freight at times. Totally not above it! You got that tool you need this one time, and one time only, definitely hitting Harbour Freight! (Sorry Harbour Freight users, I'm rough on my tools!)

100% Gladly I did not go crazy as a youngin on the trucks. I started with Craftsman box and starter kit. It has taken me over 20 years to gather my tools, and have spent a fortune on them. But they make me my $$$, so it's necessary. And agreed, there are some tools that just DO NOT suffice. No matter your feelings about money spent
 
A good example my grandson who certainly has lots of issues went to work at a Pep boys the tool man talked him into a $10000 Snap On box on the first day by the end of the month he didn't have the job.Thats his fault & he should have said no which I had certainly warned him about.The tool box was returned in like new condition after he paid about $1000 towards it & they are still trying to sue.Again completely his fault but the sells methods used to convince these young guys how easy it is to pay weekly really is a bunch of c---.
