Does anybody know for sure what size screws attach the license bracket to the trunk lid on a '55? I'd read before that they are size #14, which appears close to correct--but they're not going in easily. Before I go nuts on them and damage the holes and/or paint, thought I'd check to see if I'm using the right size.

They are the same size and hex head as the 7/16" head sheet metal type screws that mount the front inner fenders to the fender along the hood edge.

Hey Bruce--that's good news. It means I can use some of the button head stainless hardware I left over from the front of the car. I tried to screw one of those in without an allen wrench--just checking for fit and it seemed close but not quite. Perhaps it's just the fresh paint layers.......

The fresh paint on your trunk lid will tighten the holes up a bit but the originals were the same size so you will be good to go. Put a little dumdum under the bracket around the screws so it will seal out any water from getting inside the lid when it gets wet.
