I left Shell Beach at 6:20 this morning in my '55 Nomad. I arrived in El Centro, CA at about 2:00 pm. It was a cool 52 degrees in Pismo when I left. It was 104 degrees when I got to El Centro. A total of about 400 miles. I averaged 70-75 mph. traffic was moderate even through LA. Stopped at Bob's Big Boy near Yucaipa, south of San Bernardino.

Driving by the Salton Sea south of Palm Springs I stopped to help a couple going north. They were towing a 1957 Ford Fairlane and their tow bar broke. They were on their way from Yuma AZ to Mojave in the middle of Death Valley. I found a U-Haul office for them and continued on my way south.
The car ran beautifully and actually ran better when the car temp got up to 180. No AC in my car but an open window was all the AC I needed.

Wow, that’s awesome! Congrats on the trip. I’ve gotten to that level of confidence in my 69 Camaro and hope to achieve it with my 67 Chevelle and 57 210.

I cut east from 101 onto 126 to I5. Stopped in Filmore for a pee break at McDonalds.:)
I've gone from the Bay Area to Hot August Nights in Reno Nevads in my black '56 Bel Air. Normally a 4-5hr drive but I break it up with an overnight stay in Sacramento to visit friends. Plenty of 4 hour trips from Sunnyvale to Shell Beach in the 2dr and 4 dr Chevies.
I'd like to do a one way trip from Sunnyvale to San Diego in my '62 Corvette, and do the return trip in my '49 Olds 98 convertible once it's finished. Maybe this Fall.

You came right by me. I’m right at 126 and I5 in Valencia. Great to hear that you love to do long hauls in your classics!

No trailer queens here Frank, unless they're unfinished.
I saw a '57 two tone (white /blue) in Filmore,

...nothin' better than driving a old car down America's highways and taking in the scenery. Congrats on completing your car - and now enjoying it!
JR
LOL! you know these cars are never really complete, but there comes a time we just have to begin enjoying them. Cruising down Hwy 101 and parts of PCH (Hwy 1 Pacific Coast Highway is an awesome drive. I set my "foot" control at about 2200-2300 (75mph) but in LA traffic I occasionally hit 3 grand (85mph+)
The Nomad will now go through some finishing touches such as a center console for my speakers and AC vents, seat belts and some paint touch up. But it has come a long ways since two years ago. :)

Thanks John. It'd be an honor traveling with you and Jim but my wife has had us registered for HAN in Reno. I'm leaving the Nomad here in El Centro to get a wrinkle worked out of the left front fender. I tapped a tree at Good Guys in Pleasanton. Hardly noticeable, but I know it's there. Unfortunately the body shop can't get to it until he finishes with my '49 Olds . It needs to be buffed out and hang all the chrome back on it.
Long trip in Mid August would be rough for us. We're leaving for South America and the Galapagos Islands on September 6th. It's about a three week trip.
I'm hoping to drive the '62 Vette to HAN if I can, or I'll just take my black '56 again.
Hope you guys have a great ride!
Bob

Am glad to hear about your trip. Like said before, happy motoring!

I'm not really a SoCal type guy but I REALLY like pics like this one. There's a certain type of feeling that goes along with it,
and an even better feeling when standing there in person.

Bob, glad to see it out and on the road!
I got my 56 210 on the road last September, and I've driven it 8200 miles since. I've got A/C (must have for So. AZ) and power windows and locks, next add is cruise control, because it LOVES 80 mph. We've planned a trip on 2 lanes to Northern AZ for next week. If health issues don't come up again next year, we plan to to the Nat's next year. Maybe by then I'll have the new interior done.
Gotta Drive 'em!

Wow! What's been your longest trip? Is it your daily driver? I bought my new pickup in March and I've already got 17,500 on it. I'm gonna have to give it a rest when I get it back home. I have a BMW I've been neglecting, but when I get back to the Bay Area I wanna start putting some serious miles on my '62 Vette.
Bob

Longest trip? I'm nor sure, Bob..........
We went to "Roddin' on the River" in Laughlin last September, after putting about 200 shakedown miles on it..........that was probably 8-900 miles round trip.
In November, went to Riverside, Ca to National cemetery where my brother-in-law is, then over to La Mesa (my wife loved Anthony's Fish on the coast, that's gone, but they have one in La Mesa).......that was probably somewhere about the same.
Drove to Good Guys Del Mar in April and stopped at Anthony's again to celebrate her birthday.......that's probably our longest trips so far.
Daily Driver? Now that I finally retired, there's days I never leave our property. I try and alternate between my 66 Chevelle and my 56 210. My 71 pickup is just a work truck. The 3 get used at least weekly.

Did you go to The Fish Market when you were in Del Mar? One of our favorite restaurant chains in California for sea food.
Sounds like you've got the bugs pretty much worked out of your cars. That's Great!
I mentioned I had a little trouble with my tranny on my way down. I thought it was the kickdown cable that came out of adjustment, but it seems the tranny overheated as it drove great yesterday. I took it in to the shop that overhauled the 700R4 and installed the tranny cooler. He told me he used a cooler designed for RV's so he felt that wasn't the problem.
He suggested putting in a "shifter kit" as he thought there might be some rust due to a problem I had with coolant leaking into the tranny. I had it flushed several times 'til there was no trace of coolant. I hope the shifter kit works or I'll have to install a bigger tranny cooler.

We stayed at the Hilton, and walked over to the Fish Market for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We love that place.
I've got a 700 in my 56, with a 350 and 3:42 gears in the 8.5 inch 10 bolt. Darn thing can get up to 20 mpg with the AC on.
I had trouble with my 700 initially. It had been built about 12 years ago, and sat, dry, all that time. When I first tried to drive the car, it would not go in to overdrive. I called a friend who owns a repair shop. He had just had a similar problem. One of his mechanics found an article on the internet, and it had the craziest solution. He swore it worked for him, so I tried it.
Put the car on jack stands, start it up, rev it up, slam on the brakes, abuse it.........I had it rockin'! Still didn't seem like it ever found overdrive. Took it off the stands, drove out to the road, stopped, gradually accelerated, and got the 1-2 shift, the 2-3 shift, and, at about 40 it slipped into overdrive ever so softly! The theory is that there was either some debris or an air pocket that needed to be broken free. Anyway, that worked.
We're having fun with the 56, wonder if we'll hit 10,000 miles by September? Probably!

I'm taking the car in to the shop that overhauled the 700r4. Since I use a Holley carb I'll have him reset the TV cable. I did it once before but it was by trial and error. Car should be done this afternoon. I'll give a report on response time with the new shift kit. It hit 110 here in El Centro. I'm gonna drive the heck out of it in this heat and see if it acts up.
