Just installed a Borgeson 800105 steering box in my 57 Belair and the shaft is so close to my firewall that the rag joint touches the firewall. I have a Speedway 910-32996 column that I hope to install but because of the box length this can not happen. Did I order the wrong box?
The 3/4” rag joint would need to changed also as the steering column is a 1” shaft.
Will be talking to my supplier on Monday but thought I might get some thoughts from my favorite site as well.
Thanks again,
MikeH

I'd recommend the CPP 500 box----plenty room for the rag joint outside the firewall

There are different length rag joints & you need the shortest version.CPP for one makes a short version that accepts your 1" shaft & is smaller in diameter than some others not positive what spline the rag joint needs with the Borgeson box.Maybe this one

I see that was thinking the box was 36 spline this one might be correct from CPP but no photo or listing on over all length as it's 1"DD 3/4"DD. still sounds to me that he has the longer rag joint version & needs a shorter one to make things work. I ran into the same issue when I first did my 56 though it is a 500 box.

Borgeson box is dimensionally the same as a cpp500. just a different shaft, 17mm double D OP just needs the super short rag joint or a solid coupler.

I will call Summit tomorrow about a super short 3/4”ddX1”dd. The 1dd7dd in not available. I did find a post from Raider back in 2021 with the same issues I have with great pictures and have messaged him/her asked how he resolved his project.
Thanks for your help guys. I’m sure it won’t be the last time you will here from me😊

a 3/4" double-d will not fit on the Borgeson shaft. Call Borgeson direct.

looking at the picture it doesn't look very short.

Update with thanks to all. As of today I have installed a 18mm/dd half rag joint on my steering box along with a 1” dd male adapter(?) on the other side of the rag joint that fits into the 1”dd hollow Speedway steering shaft. It is still not a “direct fit” as I had to cut 1-1/2” off the steering shaft to make the column line up with the instrument cluster mount. Everything now clears the firewall but I’m concerned there may be too much pressure at the rag joint/ steering column. I’ll have better idea on this when I line things up again later this week. A good alternate might be a 18mm dd X 1” dd u-joint but Have tried several sources with no luck. Hope to start the car tomorrow to check for leaks. My winter project continues!!!

You can shim the steering box to get it to align to the steering shaft. A U-joint wont allow any better alignment. You may have to enlarge the holes in the firewall bracket to have enough adjustment
Shim for up and down alignment of the steering box? Side to side seems fine. Up and down alignment is close to the bottom of the access hole but not hitting anymore. It’s the angle of the steering column coming off the steering box that makes me wonder how much pressure is to much for a rag joint.

Have you checked that the gear box is not touching the frame at the bottom side of the gear box.On my buddies 55 which has the one piece frame it was necessary to ding the frame a little where the base of the steering box is next to the frame that wasn't necessary on my 56 two piece frame. If it's hitting in that area then getting clearance will allow the column end of the steering box to come up slightly if that is what you are needing for alignment. That might not be what you need as for as alignment just thought I'd mention it.
