I've always loved trains. I have 2 friends, (brothers) that retired from 40 years on the railroad. They get great perks and a good retirement. Also part of their retirement is they have free travel by train to travel anywhere in America

.. On AMTRAK? or in a boxcar? :)

PS. I've ridden trains in Europe (Italy and Germany) but not since I was very young in the US. One of my friends whom I went to college with and worked with at McMorrow Labs (Redstone Arsenal, AL) was working a project and he and a coworker needed to travel to California for a big project review. His coworker didn't (and wouldn't) fly, so they took a train(S) to CA and it was a long and timeconsuming trip... they basically spent the weekends on each side of their review 'traveling' on the trains... :) I was suprised the government allowed them time to do it.. :)

Amtrak LOL---when I was a kid we lived right by a train track. I used to sneak a ride up town on a caboose. It was always really slow because they had to cross a street right before it got by my house and it went North right through town about 2 blocks from the town square.

Interesting... Tom went 'uptown'.... when I was young, we usually said 'we're going 'downtown'.... :) Wonder why that is and what is the difference? Do you guys say 'uptown'? or 'downtown'?? Does it have to do with the size of the town we going to?

I figure if town is north it must be uptown---south would be downtown LOL

Both of those answers are pretty good... and either/both could be correct... ?? :)

My grandfather on my mother’s side was a railroad engineer. They moved from Iowa to Maryland in the 1940s because of his job. Unfortunately he passed away before I was born.

I wouldn't have guessed the United States, as there are countries with much more land mass than us.
As far as towns go, I have always said downtown. Petula Clark might have had something to do with that.
