I have to go way back in my memory, but I think you guys are right about the noise. Never herd the one about heat dissipation.

OK, upon doing a Google search, I found one entry in a Chrysler forum, that said the spring was there for heat dissipation and to limit brake chatter. And as I thought, you can find them on rear drums as well.
