I noticed my rear brake drums don't have the springs around the outside of the drum. Are these necessary and what do they do?

Drum springs
I belive that they are on the front because they turn as well as they roll and are more prone to that "frequency" type vibrations. kinda like rubbing your finger around the rim of a wine glass and getting that same thing to happen with a thick rubber band around the rim. it is alot more controlled.
