Satellite TV rates

I don't know how many out there think their satellite tv charges are ridiculous, I sure did! Anyway, after being a subscriber with one of the big satellite companies, not mentioning any names. and watching my bill go from $32.00 per month to over $76.00 per month over a 4 year period I called them and told them I was cancelling my account and switching over to Dish network who offered the same basic package for $19.99., which included a DVR recorder and some free movie channels. The next day they called me and said that if I would stay with them they would lower my bill to $19.99, give me a free DVR recorder, and some freebie movie channels for a year. I told them sorry, but I had already signed a contract with Dish network. Dish network has no installation charge but there is a $49.99 hookup fee. so it took me a month to get my savings started.
My question now is, why was I paying over $76.00 a month with no DVR and no movie channels when I could have been paying only $19.99 and have it all? Apparently some of these satellite companies don't mind ripping off their loyal subscribers? One of my relatives did the same thing and they lowered their bill also. So if you want to save about $600. a year, call your current satellite company and tell them you are going to cancel your bill unless they can match the Dish network price. If they don't offer a price reduction, go with Dish network, or whoever else you may have that has lower prices. Money is hard to come by these days. The $19.99 is their everyday price, not a sales gimmick to get you to switch.
By the way, I like the Dish network better than the previous company. They have better resolution and more HD than their competition and the DVR recorder is great. It has tons of features. It took them about 2 hours to install the new system. I am very pleased with my decision and now have almost $550 more a year to spend on my 55 Chevy or whatever else I decide to spend it on. Actually, I saved enough in one year to pay the insurance on my 55 for 3 years.
NOTE: With taxes and service for 2 tv's the total bill from Dish Network was just over $32.00, a month which is still a savings of $536 a year. If all 11,000 members on this site did this, that would be almost $6 million bucks a year that could be saved. Imagine how many tri-fives that would buy or redo?

We have Direct TV. Cheaper then Time/Warner Rip off.

Since late october we've been getting HBO, and other premium channels for $4/month. Next month however that goes to like $20/month on top of the regular bill unless we call and cancel. So it would put the bill over $100/month. In that case Time/Warner would be cheaper for the same channels.

OnStar works the same way, you say "no thanks", they say "well what if I lowered the monthly fee to $__.__?"
He even mentioned the lower price was because of the poor economy, but you have to cancel before getting the better price!

Crazy

Hey 55, My story exactly, i sat here thinking about the same situation and did what you did. I had been with directv for a few years and did the switch. Did the trim with my phone bill too, cut out all of the extras and i pay $24 a month for AT&T, A $10 spot for netzero each month and a $20 calling card for long distance that gives me 22 hours of talk time. A Tracfone for $7 bucks a month, thats $20 bucks for 3 months of service and i never use it, so the minutes just pile up. Now, thats living on the cheap:)

I think over time you will see Dish Network try the same Scheme as i am guessing must of been Directv, if you further your research you will find that even cable company's are known to do this style of business.

It is all about carrot dangling:D they are the same size, shape, flavor, contain same nutrients they just make one a brighter color to entice you to take there carrot:D i would like to be wrong but i have seen others who have switched in reverse of what you are doing now, only to think they are getting a better deal, talk to them a year latter, and they tell you they are going through the same scenario. I do you wish the best of luck with your new system:anim_25:

The problem I see is, that yeah 19.95 per month and free stuff for a year then all the extra's you got free are now getting billed and you are back in the same shape.

Otis, i could not agree more.

i hate those schemes where they tell you the "teaser" rate that you'll only get for 6 months, but nowhere in the ad does it tell you what you're going to have to pay for the rest of the service.

i have a similar problem with comcast cable --

It used to cost $30 per month for basic cable with free HBO and Showtime.

Then they wanted to charge $15 for showtime, so I dropped it and paid $30 for basic cable and free HBO.

Then they wanted to charge $15 for HBO, so I dropped it and paid $30 for basic cable.

Then they started hiking the price for basic cable. The cable that I used to buy for $30 per month now costs me $70 per month and I'm getting no premium channels now.

I looked at my bills -- the cable company has increased its rates by 15% every year for the past 10 years. I don't know any business that can get away with that kind of price model.

I just realized that I'm getting overcharged for my internet service too.

I was paying $29.99 per month for 3 MBPS Verizon DSL. For absolutely no reason, my Bill went up to $40 per month, even though my $30 rate was "guaranteed for life." It turns out that Verizon had started billing me for a new on-line backup service that I had never ordered. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to get those inappropriate charges refunded. But that's another story altogether.

When my bill went up to $40 I decided to leave Verizon. So I started looking at ads. I found Verizon ads that offered the exact same 3 MBPS service that I was getting, but at a much better price.

Now I understood why they were willing to price my service at "$30 guaranteed for life" -- they were now selling the exact same service for $25 per month, "guaranteed for life", with the first 6 months free!

Those dirty rotten scoundrels.

I had the same experience with that satellite service and they do this with everyone. If the regular customer service people cannot appease you and you insist you want to cancel the service they transfer you over to someone that will do that but you get like the last resort guy and he has the authority to offer what ever it takes to keep you as a customer... within whatever guidelines they have.

Cable, Directv, Dish network they are all the same animal. They all charge as much as they can get away with for as little as they can get away with.

I remember years ago when the satellite companys started out. They offered an alternative to the hated cable companies. More programming, better picture quality, and better service cheaper, but as they grew they became just as bad and as greedy as the cable companies have always been.

A sign of the times I guess. It just seems to me that greed just has no limits in the last 10 years or so, all through the business world in this country.

Part of the problem was that the cable companies invested heavily in the satellite companies so they wouldn't lose revenue. After they did that the sat prices went up. Now its pretty much a moot point who you buy the service from -- the same people are getting your money.

We've been DTV subscribers for about 15 years now...and yes we too experienced the "loyalty" problem with them. We'd see ads "for new subscribers only" HD/ HDDVR, 6mos or a year "free" premimum channel/channels, up to 4 room connection, all for less than we were paying monthly. I finally got po'd enough to call them to cancel a few years ago...they changed their tune with us immediately, our rates are now lower and we get updated/upgraded when they introduce a new service for no charge. They replaced 4 standard DVR's with HDDVRs when they went to HD programming a couple years ago at no charge...guess the "squeaky wheel gets the grease"
We pay about $75 a month including HBO(we found we don't watch the other premium channels that much so dropped them).
Comcast, the only cable company here, is about $52 mo, for their basic hookup and that doesn't include a lot of the programming we recieve with DTV basic, plus charges for each additional service like HD or additional rooms, and with the same package like we have it would cost us about $125 mo for one hookup...and their service and quality is terrible...If we were to just call and have them hookup cable we'd pay $25 per room additional hookup charge...HD and the recievers would also cost us an extra charge per room...no charge from DTV for hookup or installation. Also if you have to have a Cable tech come to your home for a problem it'll cost $50 per service call...DTV has never charged us for a service call.

I guess I'm just happy with our DTV service now...

Funny, I had dish network and was paying about $90 a month (4 tvs, hd, dvr etc etc)
I had a bad experience with DN right from the start, with their installers running cable 1 foot out from the baseboards through my brand new hard wood floors..."eyeballing it"...amongst other install problems.
after about a year, their lousy service and garbage equipment forced me to move on. DVR constant glitches, constant outages and their "turbo HD" which doesnt look too much better than SD......soooo I ultimately spent a bit more a month, + their $130 cantract termination fee just to get away from them. boy, was it worth it.

I now have Verizon FiOS, and cannot stress enough on how happy i am, that i made that change. just the picture quality alone was worth it. 100% pure fiber optics....gotta love it. I bundled with the internet, and ultimately pay about $20 more per month....but the added feature of recording something in the living room, and being able to watch it from any tv in the house...plus internet that is 7 times faster than cable.....money well spent for me.
