Does anyone know if there is a shorty spark plug made for Vortec heads which uses a plug with much longer threads than regular heads?
Plug number five is to close to the header pipe and it's difficult to keep from burning the boot on the plug wire end unless I use a boot sock which I hate.
 
Yep
They make a Excel plug that will do it
But
It is real close to the tube
I used a Autolite plug on mine in a C 10 P/U
And used Taylor Ceramic boot 8mm wires
Bad part about this is that there is plenty of room to move the tubes out 1 1/2”
If you need the plug # I can get it to you tomorrow
 
Ding the header with the side of a deep socket to create a nice rounded ding for clearance. Warm header up first. makes the clearance work easier. Then put a heat resistant boot sleeve over the wire/boot.

That usually doesn't work in this scenario. The contact area is so close to the flange that it's almost impossible to move any metal on the header tube unless you heat the tube red first. I ran into this on my SBC with angle plug heads and had to do it with my torch to allow the metal to move. And after putting pretty good dents in my heat resistant covers barely slid over the ends to protect them.

I'll have to peek at mine later to see what I actually did. I've got some old school Goodwrench angle plug heads on mine. I did run the Accel shorty's for years. Curious whats in there now.

Yes, I'd appreciate it if you'd post the plug part number IF it is for Vortec heads.
If they are NOT vortec heads, plugs made for non vortex heads will not work because they don't go deep enough into the head since the threads aren't long enough.
 
So, when i bought my Camaro, somehow, and i dont know how, i found that it had the wrong plugs in it. someone had put short reach plugs in it, i guess those where "shorties", but i even had to go chase the spark plugs holes before i put the correct ones in. i believe, that the Accel P526S is the vortec shorty plug from a quick google search. Im not sure i ended up going with them, as i see they are stupid expensive, like $25, and only like 3/16" shorter. i doubt i was putting $200 worth of plugs in my car unless i absolutely had to. i do remember that i had to loosen up at least the passenger header to do actually R&R the plugs.

I hate to do that because the headers have been ceramic coated and I would hate to possibly crack that coating.
I just figured if I could find a plug that's just a little shorter that would probably take care of the problem. Right now the plug boot is actually touching the header pipe.
 
I have dinged many of coated headers and never an issue with cracking. I use a long old socket and lay it on the tube and whack it hard with a hammer.
