I have painted my hood for my 1957 chevy (black paint). I wet sanded it. It looked good. I buffed it out and have a lot of swirl marks. I used medium cut buffing compound first, then fine cut buffing compound second, then swirl mark remover and I can't get the swirl marks out. My question is = if I sand it and reclear coat it - do I have to sand all the way to the base paint to get rid of the swirl marks?

The key to getting rid of swirl marks on black paint is to use an orbital buffer with a fine foam pad with minimal pressure. I would ask Mike in the Autogeek thread on here for tips on getting rid of it LOOOONG before I tried to reshoot it! Unless you screwed up the mix when you did the clear coat, its probably not the clear coat, but the process your using. It is very tricky to do "true" black and not get swirl marks. I take mine to a highly professional shop here in Memphis that uses a three stage process with 3M products and they get all of the spiderwebs out of it! They do an amazing job.
