I've got a 396 BBC with open chamber heads and I'd like to bump up the compression. are there stock closed chamber heads that wont work in a straight swap? I'm thinking maybe there are some clearance issues with pistons used in the open chamber heads?

thanks!

charlie

It all depends what piston you have. open chamber pistons with domes won't fit in closed chamber heads. however flat tops will. also early 396 engines were all closed chamber. so check you pistons and post a picture I'm sure I could tell from a good picture.

I put a set of early 396 heads on a stock 68 396 with factory dome piston and had no clearance problems.
But when finished the compression ratio was not friendly to Pump Gas.

I agree except for the flat top piston part, they dont exist in the 396 world.

Trw offered a flat top for the 396/402 in the early eighties

thanks guys, the heads I was looking at are the 1966, 702's...98cc chambers. Great compression but they'd require too many changes in my current set up to make work. I may get them and save for a future build.

No blower, 9.0 compression street motor with a 300hp nitrous unit.

Yes, car ran 12.80 on motor alone and 11.58 on the bottle. We used to go to the track and run motor only on fri. evening then go to the street races and use the bottle. made a few bucks that way. Of course this was about 20 yrs ago and a whole lot more irresponsible back then.
