I have used GM tilt and tilt/telescopic columns in many builds - and as stated tilts generally add length, and telescopics always do - it's the nature of the beast. One could modify a late '60's- early '70's GM pickup tilt fairly easily, and some GM vans from that era would work also. Try to find one worth rebuilding or price a nice used one and you'll be well on your way to the cost of a brand new Flaming River or Ididit. If you're simply looking for extra room shorten the original column and use a smaller diameter wheel (with PS) - not that hard to do.
I am very much into 72 Chevy trucks and can tell you a decent tilt wheel for one of them is not cheap. Even those mid to late 70s van columns are not cheap anymore. I used to have a guy that would rebuild a van column and shorten it to fit a truck perfectly. You could not tell it from a truck column when he was done.
