Most places are that way. You shouldn't be ordering a $5 item and expecting much different. You either need to wait until you need $50 or $100 worth of small stuff or expect to pay a lot for shipping and handling.

Even Summit, which I think is the best model for the rest of them, charges you $10.95 S&H or something close to that for up to $100.

What's up with Danchuck, I was going to order a $4.95 screw kit and they want $12.50 for shipping ?:confused0006:
They could use Flat rate shipping from the post office and charge you $4.95.
Most of the people charge XXX for shipping even tho they get huge discounts from the shippers. It is about 1/2 you or I would pay if we walked up to the counter. Funny but very few companies pass the savings on to you. Thats why OPG or classic Industries can offer free shipping from time to time.

Don't forget - the company has to pay an employee to package up your purchase. Cost of labor plus overhead (benefits, insurance, etc.) adds to the overall shipping cost. I'm not saying I like it either, but the basic shipping cost from the freight company isn't the whole picture. My $.02. Your mileage may vary.

Also, most companies won't send parts by the postal service because they can't be tracked. Not saying a bag of screws needs to be tracked.

Actually, they can. Had to send something back a couple of months ago and the company I ordered from requested that I return it through the postal service. It cost a little extra for the service, but it wasn't that much.

They know what the market will bear for the part, so the added profit is disguised as "shipping"...

I'm in the mail order business. Guess what....shipping supplies are expensive! And NO it's not a cost of doing business. When we price our products they are priced "at our door" or as we say FOB our factory. These items typically are placed in shipping cartons, envelopes, boxes or what ever is required. Then there is sealing tape, strapping, carton staples, peanuts etc..etc..etc... Now what about the labor for the shipping clerk to pack it for shipment and the necessary documentation. Oh and lets not forget to add insurance.

I don't like the overcharging that I see going on any more than the rest of you. In some instances I won't order parts because of these overcharges. I bill all my customers exactly what the UPS rate book dictates for the weight and zone. I don't add on for any of the above but Most companies do.

I was a contractor for the DOD a long time ago. The amount of BS involved finally got to me and I bailed. I still don't know how anyone can make a toilet seat for the DOD for $237.00 and still make a dime in profit. I know I couldn't!

Ok-so the post is a few months late...

Had to add my 2 cents after running across this post.

Had to return some brake lines (bad fit) to a company in a sunny place with palm trees.

1. Paid extra shipping because of box size to get the lines. This in addition to the shipping costs of many other parts ordered at same time.

2. Followed company's return policy using FedEx and was gouged (perception is reality) on the return. Wound up costing me nearly 2/3 the cost of the lines in just shipping costs--should of kept them for wall decorations.

3. FedEx did advise me that the large company does get a break on shipping costs, but sorry, I was out of luck and poorer.

4. I decided I would not order from that company again even if it is somewhat convenient. After a few months still holding firm.

5. Also found out that some parts from this company came from other companies (with original packaging), including one just down the road from me. Live and learn.

2 cents worth

ps I agree with some of the costs explanations as stated by the shippers in this post-but in this case as I said...gouged.

Hi Okie. Welcome to the real world. Dealt with both companies. Only alternative have found is to put an order together (if possible), call one of the companies that make the shows (Danchuk makes some shows, but will not let you order ahead of time, didn't have what I needed in the truck) (I just used H&H with excellent results), went to the show, picked them up and paid no state taxes or shipping) and enjoyed the show. Worth it on large or heavy items and especially itty bitty items that cost way less than the shipping. Good Luck. Lloyd

Shipping....

Danchuk charges actual freight for every item it ships. If in doubt you can go to the UPS website, plug in the information, and get a shipping quote before you buy....every time I check it comes out the same as our shipping program. And remember....UPS is a one pound minimum. We will ship via postal service on occasion...just ask the CSR. He will tell you that if it gets lost we are not responsible...but the postal service usually will deliver with no problem. As far as tracking even the postal service will tell you their tracking is not the best....thus the reason we don't use it nor recommend it.

Just for the record the company I spoke of was not yours. I rarely return parts unless for good reason.

I gathered that. I was just setting the record straight as to our policies...just in case there was a doubt, as the thread was started with a question regarding Danchuk and shipping charges. I wanted the members to understand we charge actual UPS rates...and we always will.
