Ran across this and tried the 50/50 mix of ATF & Acetone. Soaked some Ford upper control arms to remove the shafts and it did work well. I had nothing to compare, however.

This is what I use as well. All they used at the Air Force Depot facility I worked at in Utah. I figured if it worked that well for aircraft it would work for me at home, worked well it did!

It depends. I use ATF and diesel to soak cyl when waking up a zombie engine. Brake fluid if water is present. a electrolysis bath using powdered molasses will remove rust. sometimes plain old soapy hot water will work. I boil used pistons in a coffie can with dish liquid. Breaks loose the varnish and crud and loosens up the piston pins. I reciently had a tractor carb that was cast iron and the throttle shaft was frozen. I took it apart and boiled it in soapy water. The difference in expansion rates between the cast body and brass throttle shaft allowed it to free up.

I have had limited success with many of the over the counter products. My favorite for several years has been 50/50 mixing ATF with either Lacquer Thinner or Acetone. I introduced this to my friends and our parts pullers when we owned a salvage yard. In retirement we still hang out in a shop. They call the mix "Rusty Ray". We keep it in labeled spray bottles around the shop and use it all the time including yesterday to free up stuck pads on one of our lifts.
We tried hitting the pads with a large hammer and they would not move. Sprayed "Rusty Ray" on the pivot points and within minutes we hit them again and they moved. Worked them back and forth until we could move them by hand.

I've always had pretty decent luck with tried and true Liquid Wrench. Learned about it from my dad, let's not go into how many years ago that was!

Probably not as macho sounding as the big boys. But at the end of the day no one cares how the job got done.
