After reading these forums and watching videos, I think that I have the wiring for turn signals down but please check my sanity :)! I have a 56 3100 with an ignition switch and steering column from a 65 Chevy van. The ignition switch has 5 connections on the rear - D-R, ACC, BAT, IGN, and GND. The current wiring is a rat's nest so there's no way to make heads or tails of it, and I don't want to rip it all out and rewire yet. That's a job for another year.

My plan = Wire the flasher from the fuse block using a connection that's only on when the ignition is in the ACC position. Then wire the new turn signal switch as normal (flasher to purple wire for turn signal switch, white from brake pedal switch, other connections out to lights/turn signals). Should work yes?

Also, the turn signal switch has a brown wire for 4 way flashers, and a button for it on the steering column. I don't know how this could be connected so that the 3100 has four way flashers (hazard lights). What am I missing?

Yes, turn signals should work as you discribe. Make sure the bed is grounded to the cab.
A separate heavy duty 4 way flasher should be wired to constant power and the brown wire connected to it.

Many thanks! A standard 2 way flasher will work for the turn signals, right? Kinda like this one:
For the hazards, it's a four way flasher? Why four way and not two way wired direct to battery?
If you use electronic flashers, you need to put them on a fuse. The electronic flasher will work for either. A thermo/mechanical flasher will stay open in the case of a short, the electronic will keep flashing. A heavy duty flasher will operate 4 bulbs and 2 indicators where a standard will only operate 2 bulbs and 1 indicator.
You want the turn signal flasher on switched power so it can't be left on with the key off. The 4 way needs to be on constant power so they will flash with the key off.
Electronic flashers are polarity sensitive so power goes to the plus terminal.

Thank you. That makes sense. I'll look online for a HD four way flasher. If you know of one to point me to, feel free!
The one you listed will work. It's rated at 25 amps, so it will operate all 6 bulbs. In the description of that flasher, it says "variable load".
An electronic flasher doesn't depend on the load like a thermo/mechanical flasher. A mechanical flasher is designed to flash at a certain rate with a certain load (number of bulbs).
