Not a ‘tip’ exactly but I picked up one of those Griot’s Garage synthetic clay bars last week. My car has about 30 year old paint on it, I waxed it over the summer but you could still feel quite a bit of ‘drag’ when you ran your hand across it - so I knew this Winter I would need to clay bar it.

The bar itself is more like a ‘puck’ which is nice, not the actual old gummy Clay.

Here’s a few photos. I enjoy cleaning my car, I’m not a geek on it. Is there something out there that’s better? Maybe. Probably. But for the average DIY guy the price and result was 5 stars in my book.

The results speak for themselves. I've owned enough black cars to know they show every imperfection. Looks fantastic! I've had good luck with Griot's products also, including their clay bar. A good claying is a good substitute for polishing the paint before wax. Amazing how much tree sap and just air pollution those clay bars will remove. Does your paint now feel silky smooth or at least better? Curious which brand of wax you will use now to seal it up?

Oh its as silk as underwear now. I'm going to use the Griots polish and then Griots Best of Show wax. I have their orbital buffer to put it on.

Paint looks good. Those 2X4 cradles need to be turned. That top board is to keep it from rolling off.
Yes sir, good catch, car is off cradles now back on the ground - but you are right I had it wrong. Luckily for me the car didn't go anywhere, I actually wasnt even under neath of it. I ran my air hoses under the door sills with the taillight wiring but having it up in the air sure made it easier on my back and knees.

I thought I saw a shiny bird in that paint. Looks great. Must be one of them 30K paint jobs.....
I doubt it, it was painted in 1990 and 30k then could have bought you a decent house.

Looks great. What type of paint is on the car? Why are you flipping the bird in the fourth picture?

Not sure on the paint, I bought the car this past summer. It was a one family owner which was pretty cool. It's completely original besides being painted once about 30 years ago. In excellent shape - still has the Bill of Sale in the window.

If you've got it as smooth as silk underwear now and looking that good, I think you could skip the polish step and go straight to the wax. I've got their orbital also. Be careful how many friends and family you show these pictures to. I made that mistake and got all kinds of detailing requests for their cars. 🙄
