Perhaps its a Canadian engine and has different numbering system than US?

My '57 was built in Canada. Has VIN plate on firewall, rather than windshield pillar like US built cars.

On that plate are a serial number for the vehicle and an engine number. The engine number stamped into the block pad matches the number on the VIN plate. It consists of numbers only, no letters. Later year Canadian engines may include letters as well, but I have not found a reference source for Canadian engine numbers.
