Hi I am new to this forum so wanted to say hi.

However I could do with some help if possible.

I wonder if you could help a 57 chevy owner here in the UK.
I have a 57 Belair 4dr Hard Top and I have just had all the front and rear suspension renewed.

Before I had it renewed the back end was sagging and when you looked at the front of the car on a flat surface the passenger side front end was down lower than the drivers side. The garage then replaced the front coils and shocks and it was perfect, then they replaced the rear leaf springs and shocks and now when you look at the front of the car the drivers side is down more than the passenger side and the same for the rear of the car.

Can anyone tell me please what can cause this so I can advise the garage who seem to be puzzled by it in the UK, I dont want to accept this after spending a load of money on parts and labour?

If anyone can share their thoughts I would really appreciate it.

Dan a couple of things to check out, first check to see that the front coil springs are seated correctly in the pockets with the end of the coils clocked to set at the stops built for them.

Then also check to see that both rear shackles are correct and not flipped over hitting the trunk floor.

A couple ideas...
If you measure the distance from frame to ground and if it's even perhaps the body mounts may need replacing or shimming.
If you measure and frame is off try swapping leaf springs and/or coils in addition to verifing the coils are in their pockets
Good Luck

"The garage then replaced the front coils and shocks and it was perfect,"

" then they replaced the rear leaf springs and shocks and now when you look at the front of the car the drivers side is down more than the passenger side and the same for the rear of the car."

Your problem is in the rear springs if I read you right. Could be like another poster said, the rear shackle is reversed and hitting the trunk floor. Or, you have a badly formed new spring. :anim_25:

Thanks

Thank you for all your advice, i will be taking it back to the shop today and will give them this feedback and just tell them to sort it.

I have spent a lot of $$$ to get the parts over from the USA to the UK and then also to get them fitted so I need it to be right. And I asked for your help because I did not want to be just told by the shop that this is how it should be so i needed some knowledgeable ammunition to fire back at them if needed. So thanks to all.

Thanks for your help.

Here's another thing to check that I have seen on several of these frames. Some of the frames have clear evidence of being bent at the axle bumper location. This is most common on the passenger side, and causes the passenger corner to sit high, which makes the driver's front sit low. This is probably causes by a hard hit due to a pothole or something on the passenger side rear wheel.

One way to check for this is just to look for bulges on the sides of the frame at the top of the hump. Another way would be to block up the frame at the main frame rails in 4 locations, and measure from the ground to the bottom of the frame near the bumper.

Basically what happens is that the frame is bent down from the hump to the bumper. This causes the rear of the passenger leaf spring to sit lower, which makes this corner higher.

It's interesting that the 4dr HardTop uses the same default 4 leaf springs as the sedans, I have checked the rear wheel weight of the various models, and the Sport Sedan is almost as heavy as the Convertible, so it must have been marginal not to receive the 5 leaf springs.
I am getting our Sport Sedan springs back from being reset, so we will see how that turns out. The rear was about an inch down on what the specs called for.
