Jusr got a new set of 225/70/15 TAs and some Torq Thrust Ds. Question raised white letters in or out.

I tried my '69 Corvette wheels and tires on my '55 just for fun. It has RWL out.

I love them on the '69 but hated the way they looked on the '55. So, I vote for in.

OUT IF ITS A ROD, IN IF ITS A CRUZING OLD LOOK :sign0020:

I am surprised.
This would have made a good poll.

Not that it matters, but I've always understood that car show judges don't like the white lettered tires. You'll get downgraded. Myself, personally, I don't like to "advertise" for companies so I would put the letters in. But if you like 'em out, more power to you, this is America!

In or Out ???

Actually, I'm in the market for a set of Torque Thrust D's for my 55 wagon, to replace the aluminum slots that came on it. I have a set I'm currently negotiating on, that have an uncommon brand of tires, lettering out. My opinion is that BFG Radial T/A's have been around for so long, and are such a recognized brand, that they look 'right' on older cars with the lettering out. However, with 'off brands' of tires, my preference would be to have the lettering in. Just my $0.02.

Regards,
John

Actually, I haven't seen 'off brands' of tires with RWL for quite a while. Just the BFG's and Firestones.

I think it all comes down to personal preference. For myself on my car and the era it resembles the RWL's are 'in'...there weren't any RWL, per se, on tires in the '60's. There were the Firestone 'Redlines' and the Goodyear 'Blue Streak wingfoots' did have white lettering on Goodyear and the wingfoot logo but other than that most tires were b/w or a variation(width) of w/w.

BFG TA's 'in'

I'm with you G.R. I really like your set up. It's the same look I want for my wagon. Are your wheels Torque Thrust D's, or Torque Thrust Originals? Or, are they something else? They look like 15" wheels, correct? What size tires are you running? I think the rears might be a bit larger than I can use. Anyways, I agree that in most cases, I prefer the lettering 'in'.

John

I went with 16" Torque Thrust II's. 16X8 in the back and 16X7 in the front. Both are zero offset.
(I really like the Torque Thrust D's but I haven't seen them available with zero offset. Maybe by special order? I don't know.)

They are Goodyear TripleTreads. 235/65R-16 in the rear and 215R/65R-16 in the front.

I really wanted to stay with 15's but I had to choose 16's to be able to get the TripleTreads. I have had them on 2 other cars, love them and was determined to have them on my '55 if possible.
They are a very high rated tire and that was important to me because I'm going to drive this car across the country more than once. Tirerack.com has a very good rating system on tires that is very useful. Check it out. The T/A's aren't bad but the TripleTreads are up way up there.

Anyway, like I said earlier, I like blackwalls better which is good because no RWL in TripleTreads.

Wheels

Hi G.R.,
I just saw your reply, as I was on vacation last week. Are your tires 70 series? I just bought a set of AR TT-D wheels with 255/60-R15 rear (7") and 215/60R15 front (6"). I haven't tried to fit them on the rear yet, but all my calculations say they should fit. Here's a picture of the wheels:

John, mine are 70 series same size as you have, same rims in front, backs are 8.5. I wanted the taller profile, even so, I still had to completely deflate the back tires, jack up the rear of the car and let the rearend hang and take off the lower bolts on the shocks. Then it was squeeze and push the tire between the axle and the body until it finally went in, PIA but it was worth it:)

I chose to put the RWL to the inside and run BW out.
