My car is almost road ready and I need to purchase some whitewall tires. They are going on a 57 belair. I did a search and now I'm more confused than beforehand. Some people like Coker's and some say their no good. Some like Diamond back and some don't. Seems like these are the two major brands,or am I missing something? Looking for some recommendations for a 14 " tire. I bought 4 new Wheel Vintiques 14x6 rims that I will be using. Also a size recommendation that would look good and not look to small. Thanks!

Coker bias ply are considered good – that's what I have. I think the negative feedback is from the radials.

Also check out the new Coker radials that are made with a bias ply look.

We have Diamondbacks on both cars. The sport coupe has 14x6 rims and uses 225 70 14 which look and handle real well, the sport sedan has stock rims 14x5 and has 215 75 14, it looks good but is as much tire you could get on the 14x5. The sport sedan had Cokers on it when we got it, but were worn, so replaced with the DBs and huge difference in handling and comfort of travel,
The whitewalls are the main difference, the Coker whitewalls yellow out in no time, whereas the DB stay real white.

What model tires did you get? Diamondback 11 or 111? What size ww ? Are they the bf Goodrich radial TA ? I see only a couple that have the 225-70-14. Sorry for all the questions but I want to get the right ones the first time. Oh, do you have to by right from the company or is there a dealer to by from. Thanks

Really need more information about the car and how you intend to use it.

If you are going to drag race it, then Mickey Thompsons might be what you need. :) The right tool for the job.

If you are going to run the Power Tour every year, then Diamond Back migh be a good choice. They are made by adding a whitewall to a modern tire.

If you want to enter the car in an AACA judged evet. The bias ply tires from Coker are the way to go.
Coker also makes a radial that looks like the original bia ply tire. More road worthy than the bias ply, but more expensive to.

I run Coker radials. I like the look of the Coker wide white wall better than the Diamond Backs. Personal taste. And I generally drive locally. Not a whole lot of highway 80 MPH driving. I don't think that they are speed rated for for that kind of use anyway. But they are fine for around town or the back roads. Again, use the right tool for the right job.

As for Coker being hard to balance. I bought my tires and 14" wheels directly from Coker ( I live in Chattanooga ) . They mounted and balanced four tires without excessive weights and they run smooth and straight. One finger driving down the freeway at 70 MPH.
Now my front end was rebuilt and the wheels are also new. Also had the front end aligned by an old school mechanic that still has old school equipment. If someone has a worn out front end and/or original wheels that have been curbed a few times over the years, then any tire would fail to perform well.

As for the whitewalls turning yellow, I would want to know what are they cleaning the whitewall with?
I use BlechWhite and have not had any problem with yellowing on my Cokers

Isnt it great that we have the delima of having too many choices for our old cars? :)

My 2 cents.

.edit here are my cokers, I think they look great and they perform well for the way I use them.

Ahh, BF Goodrich Silvertowns. My memory is slipping. I thought it was Firestone. Great thing about trifive.com is that there is someone who knows the real lowdown no matter what the subject is. Lots of knowledge here! :tu

Whitewalls

Original bias ply tires were 2 1/4 in. The radial Coker is 2 1/2. Don't know about the belted radial. I put diamondback 2 1/4 made by Michelin on my last car. I personally like the 2 1/4 better. diamondback is located in Conway, S. C.

Thanks for all the replies! You all have good looking tires on good looking cars! Im not any less confused than I was before I posted. I was originally thinking Coker's but I was talking to my friend and he said a guy in his car club had a Coker blow out and damaged his rear quarter. (Don't know how old the tires were). I also was talking to a guy at a car show and he had just put a set of Coker's on his Chrysler and had one that wouldn't balance. One thing nice about Coker's is free shipping through Summit. I'll just have to decide and get them ordered. [emoji848]

One of my new rims was screwed up so the hubcap nubs wouldn't line up with the valve stem. It looks to me that the hole for the valve stem wasn't centered between the nubs. It is an inch different from the hole to each nub. I called Summit and they are sending me another. They are great to do business with. The only thing is now I have to get the tire swapped out and rebalanced.
