Hi,

Is anyone up? It's almost 3AM Eastern time LOL.

I need a new muffler for my 57; it's a mostly original (part cosmetic restoration) show car, senior car with AACA and VCCA and has either a silver or gold certificate - don't remember - with CCC. Everything on the car now is either original to the car or was purchased as NOS or correct repro.

Ecklers has 23" and 29", UI can't just get under the car and check, it's stored in someone else's garage and 3AM is not a good time to go out and check in someone's garage.

any help please?

thank you! P

First - 283s never had a single barrel carb. Only 235s had a single barrel carb. A 283 is either 2 barrel single exhaust or 4 barrel dual exhaust. (or dual 4 barrel or fuel injected)

I'm sure Mikey knows the answer off the top of his head. OTOH - why do you need to buy the muffler at 3:00 AM? Why not just go over there and measure it during the day? If you're only replacing the muffler, you really don't know what somebody put on there if you don't measure it.

That being said - 1929 - 1957 Chevrolet Master Parts & Accessories Catalog says a NOS muffler is different for regular vs. convertible and single vs. dual exhaust. Check the listing for part number and length.

I see you are on the east coast, you might try Gardner Exhaust in NY. This is not a plug for them but they know their stuff. I have just ordered a complete 57 dual exhaust system to include; mufflers, cross over, pipes, hangers and hardware. Not cheep but as I have seen their work I consider them one of the best manufacture’s of original appearing and performing exhaust. Their work is very impressive.
On another subject, I live in the north west and unlike some other areas, we don’t have Trifive judging events out here. I think at one time the annual Bowling Green Trifive event had a judging but that is 2000 mile away from me.
As I have a mostly stock car I would like to see events where knowledgeable people judge cars for their originalness. Trifive apparently are not like Corvettes that have NCRS available. Almost all Trifive’s I see are modified cars… Al

I'm unaware of any 'strict original' judging for our TriFives any more. In days past, both the Nomad Club and the Classic Chevy International held detailed judging events, but those days are long past. AACA conducts 'original' judging for all antique cars, but due to the great variety of vehicles, the 'level/detail' of AACA judging does not even approach that we had back in the '70's-90's...

There isn't any detailed judging, even at the TriFive Nationals events, not for original or custom or modified or any other 'class'; instead the 'selection' of the top cars are done from an overall condition/uniqueness of their construction. An 'original' car these days gets attention just for the simple fact that it IS still original.
