Glad it worked it. When I registered last year after moving back to Cali, AAA told me straight up that I needed to have someone else do the verification. She wouldn't even look at my car. I checked with local PD (good sized city) and they said they wouldn't do it at all. They told me to contact CHP. A CHP officer came to my house and quickly signed the form and they didn't charge me anything.

Nonsense. I'm in Northern California and my AAA office handled a couple of trifive purchases/registration title transfer transactions with no such dual VIN requirement. I would start over and go to a different AAA office or directly to a California DMV office.

I'll add that I bought my 57 out of state so California DMV required an extra step; I had to have a peace officer verify the VIN tag matched registration info. California Highway Patrol did so looking at only one VIN location, the tag on door post.

VIN

I had a PO come to me to verify the VIN so I could get a title. The tag was enough, he had no idea there was also a number stamped on the frame and if he did, he never would have gotten his uniform dirty crawling under the car to check. This two VIN is BS.

It's not riveted on. As we were walking out the AAA door before even looking at the car she said, "I see it's a 1956, that means I'll have to see two VIN locations." It makes no sense but those were her words. She said you can either take your chances at the DMV or get a police officer to do it.

Hand her a creeper, flashlight and a mirror and point her in the right direction to the second VIN.

Glad you got it registered. I think you got jerked around a bit.
I bought my '56 in Washington and registered it right at the DMV office (California). I don't have AAA. All they did was check the VIN on the signed over Washington registration and the door jamb, issue a new title and I was done. No smog requirement on old cars in California either.

What a hassle. What I really don't understand is why join AAA if you don't even want to drive it far?

I bought mine around 1975, about 5 or 6 years later I realized I never had the title transferred (wasn't on the road). Sent in the paperwork and got the title in my name. Moved to TN and just showed them the title and got my registration. Does AAA require more proof than the state?

Glad you got it straightened out.

The only other verification you could have told her was that if and that's a BIG IF, the car had it's original battery it would have the vin on it's tag., but then again how many 10 year old cars, let alone 50-60 still have their original battery and all the tags?

Now that you've got tags, Get it out and enjoy it.:tu

I agree, I would tell AAA to stick it. I have never had a VIN physically checked by anyone in TN. If something doesn't throw up a flag in their data base, you get a new title in the mail a few weeks later. Piece of cake here.

The AAA Here in Fullerton seems overly worried about the paperwork being kicked back by the DMV so they seem to lean on the overkill side. I heard them talking to an elderly couple that had an old Rolls Royce that was being inspected that he did not have all the right labels. He was very frustrated and his wife was trying to calm him down so I'm not the only one. I guess that's why she told me I should go right to the DMV. I did not really want to sit there in their stupid drive through with the car in line with 20 other cars. Luckily I have no more cars to transfer from Oklahoma.
