Here I am again. Just got off phone with GM rep. about the intermediate steering shaft on the 2005 GMC I'm currently in possession of. It has 47K and I bought it new. Never drive it on gravel and only pull an 18 foot boat 6-8 times a year. Third thing to go bad in a couple of years. Previously had both sealed wheel bearings go out on the front at 38K and 42K. When first bearing went out, on trip away from home, I was turned away at a GMC dealership. Service manager said they were too busy and he sent me to the Chevy dealership down the road.
After getting repair, the following week went to see GMC dealership in Cedar Falls IA and the service manager told me I wasn't a preferred customer and basically get lost. Followed up talking to GM people on phone (mostly overseas that I had trouble understanding) and they said out of warranty - not our problem.

As you can see, pickup is really abused. Well, now the intermediate steering has gone out. Read up on it on internet. GM has had problems with it for years. I contacted GM about it. They insisted I go to GM dealer to have it checked/verified. It took dealer about 10 minutes to check (cost me $25) and tell me what I already knew. As mentioned, just off the phone with rep. who said there was NOTHING GM WOULD DO. Actually, after the first two experience, it was nothing I didn't expect. I know it's out of warranty, but these are parts they seem to have all sorts of problems with - that should last for a very long time. My wife's Toyota is older and has 100K on it. All I've ever done to it is brakes, tires and regular maintenance.

Anyway, I'm done getting this off my chest and DONE WITH EVER BUYING ANOTHER GM PRODUCT!

Sorry to hear about your bad luck there buddy...

But if you stop and think about it, and read all the recall list's, F**D and Dodge are at the top of the list with more re-calls than Chevy ever dreamed of.

I would not own either product if you gave them to me to drive for 5 years for free with free fuel....

Yes i do bleed Chevy Orange if you cut me....:sign0020:

Not trying to start a Chevy verses Ford verses Dodge war here, just stating the facts.

With that being said, i have a 04 Duramx 2500 HD that we purchased brand new and i have turned up the wick on the motor that just flipped over at 150,000, i have put 8 injectors, and 2 batterys in it in 8 years, pretty darn good if you ask me..... and the injectors are made bye Bosh, so you cant blame Chevy for Bosh's design....

Hope you have better luck with your next truck no matter what you decide to purchase....

Rick

Sorry to hear about your problem with the truck, and I hate when things go bad and its out of warranty. But you will find the same issues with all the other brands and I know they won't warranty parts either on a 8 year old truck even though you have low miles. I think you can pick up a new shaft for about $60.00 but I understand your frustration 47,000 miles it should still be good. Hope you get it worked out, and I have heard if you write to GM quality direct than may be of some help, as they sure don't want to lose a good customer. Some dealers and the service practice give the OEM's a bad rep.

Rock auto carries a replacement piece that is supposed to be better than the stock piece for around 40.00 i am told. My 47k mile 2005 truck needs it replaced. Even with that i love my chevy truck. My wife also has one just like it that has 101k on it.

I used to work at a GMC dealership, the treatment you received is absolute Bull!$&@. That is a safety issue! Whats it going to take? A crash? It only takes but 30 minutes to do. Ive done plenty of them, its very common part that fails. I guess they didnt want to make a sale, and make a lifetime customer out of you. What a shame.

I have a 05 GMC Yukon that the transmission went out of at 60K. Never pulled a trailer (don't even have a hitch) Now it has a bunch of issues with the heat and air. I know GMC and chevy are basically the same, but I will never own a GMC again.

Fuzz...... Might be worth checking online to see if there is a recall covering that part. Never hurts to check.

From the lack of professionalism and courtesy with which you were treated by these dealers, I would not automatically assume that they would necessarily volunteer that information.

So check it out yourself. Might get lucky.

Best regards,

Harry

I wrote off GM in 2007 after buying 3 new trucks in 2 years. Bad paint and gm said to get a paint shop to get an estimate. It was over 7K (1 week old truck) and gm offered to give me 700. After a month they offered me a lesser truck, then 1 that cost 1500 more for free. It also had bad paint. I made them give me my money back and have since bought used vehicles.

Wow, those are unusual responses from dealer service departments! One of them basically told you to get lost? Service departments are so concerned about customer opinion these days, they send you a satisfaction survey and practically beg you to give them high marks so they don't get slapped on the hand by the manufacturers. It's amazing you were treated that way by two different service departments. Were you demanding they fix the problems for free?

Like your wife's Toyota, there are plenty of Chevy & GMC pickups that have gone well over 100K miles with no major issues. As an example, a buddy of mine bought a used 1996 GMC 1500 back around 2000 and drove it until it had ~120K miles on it. It was so reliable, he bought another used one (a 99 model, I think) and ran that one to well over 100K. As I recall, he had to replace an A/C component on one, and a water pump on the other. Both times he got more money than he expected when he sold them. He then put over 100K on a 2008 Impala, which at around 90K needed a transmission repair, but his local dealer cut him a deal on the repair price. So I guess a lot depends on the dealer and your relationship with them.

My 01 Silverado has been abused since I bought it new now has over 125,000 Ive towed equipment trailers and other than brakes and minor rust it runs great my buddie bought an 03 Dodge and hes had nothing but trouble with it and only has 70,000 on it I wouldnt own anything but a Chevy!!!

Harry and MikeB,

No safety recalls, have checked on line. Just a Technical Service Bulletin that alerts the dealerships of their part that keeps failing.

The first wheel bearing that went out 3 hours from home on a Friday, the GMC Service manager said "we're too busy to look at your truck". I explained my situation about being away from home and he said they could look at it on Monday. I mentioned again about being quite a ways from home and didn't want to stay the weekend. He said, "Don't you understand what I said? We're too busy. There's a chevy dealership just down the road. Take it there." I did take it there and must say I was treated very well by them. Mills Chevrolet.
Took the old bearing to dealership where I bought truck and service manager told me I wasn't a "preferred customer" and after he stuck his finger under my nose (I should have decked him) telling me the bearing failed because I abuse my truck driving it into curbs and large potholes I left telling him I would never set foot in their place again. I think they just irritate people to get them out if they have a complaint. I did not expect full replacement. I offered to split the cost of it. No dice.

I know this is not a real costly item and I can fix it myself. I didn't want to go to dealership and have them look at it, but the gal from GM insisted that it be looked at so they could tell me what I already knew. Can understand in some ways, but to charge $25 for 10 minutes and then want $163 more to fix something that is very problematic for GM. Asked service manager what would happen if I didn't fix it. She told me "nothing would happen and it wasn't a safety issue."

I do have another GMC pickup and it has been very good. It is a 1992 and I take good care of it too.

I just don't like the attitude I've gotten while dealing with GM. The people on the phone about the intermediate shaft were OK, but when I talk to someone at a dealership it seems they don't want to hear it. And I try to do like my wife says, "Honey gets more results." Too bad all I seem to get from GM is SOUR GRAPES!

THIS is the problem!! People have become so arrogant...so out of line, that it has become near impossible to deal with anybody reasonable...and it is most dealerships, so I will not pinpoint just one brand here.

This is why I love this trifive site...we all wish things were a little more like it use to be. We don't have to go back in time, (some advance are good) but what ever happened to common sense, courtesy, respect...to few and far between it seems...

I feel for your situation when the wheel bearing went out. I would have filed...heck I would still file a complaint with GM :anim_25:
