Door hinge broke, what to do?

Ok, now I need advice please! The upper door hinge has a flat (spring?) steel plate that lays on top of the hinge. It broke and makes a big click or snap now when I open the door. What is the easiest thing to do? I just got back from hip replacement surgery (went just fine!) and I can't remove and rebuild the whole thing right now. Tell me what to do if you can, thanks, Chris

Chris, I checked the Danchuk catalog and did not see the detent or spring listed, only a complete hinge. The spring is riveted to the hinge so it could be replaced if you could find one, In the meantime try greasing it with white lithium grease to quiet it down. Good luck with recuperating from your hip surgery. It is amazing what they can do today with joint replacement. I bet you miss banging the gears in the 57!

It is a flat spring and does detent the door open. If it is broken, you could try grinding the remaining part of it off at the corner with a burr in a die grinder. It should break off at the corner after a little grinding. That would keep it from snapping when opening and closeing. You can replace it at a later date, just have to hold the door in the open position in the mean time. :) I thought the detent springs were available but can't find them now.

check corvette central or paragon corvette. 58-62 corvette uses the same detent spring .

Thanks everyone, that is what I will do, grind and break it off. I am driving my 57! I could drive after 2 weeks! --------------------------------------------I had a amazingly fast recovery with the new hip. I could walk 100yds easily 6 days afterwards. It is 7 weeks now, I walk a 1 mile a day for excercise. I think I was very lucky! It was a Zimmer brand cobalt steel ball and socket, plastic material sandwiched in between them. Old school but that is fine with me. I can not tell any difference at all in how this one feels and the good original! But I am still being careful for awhile, they can dislocate in odd positions such as upside down rolling around under the car. Thanks all!
