Engine identification

I am not very talented with mechanics but have come to think that the straight 6 in my '57 4 door may not the the original engine. How would I determine what engine I have. My son thinks that this might be a later engine and it does appear to be larger than the straight 6 in his '69 Nova. Our thoughts are that when making adjustments to the engine we may be using the wrong numbers.

Engine Code

This is an example out of my "By the Numbers"

T 4 14 DM The first letter is the assembly plant Tonawanda
the next number is the Assembly month April
the next umber is the Assembly day 14th
the last letters are the suffix code as to what options came
with the car.
This stamp is on the flat part of the block just below where the side cover screws on reads T 22 IA The T is for Tonawanda, I cant figure what the rest is.

I located the date on my 6 cyl and it's located right behind the oil dipstick, B 20 57 that is Feb, 20th 1957 that is the casting date of the block.

Hope this helps.
Bob
