Wasn't sure of which forum to use for this as I couldn't find a general topic section.

Are antique autos required to have a front license plate? I know it's probably different state by state(I split my time between Maine and NH), but I thought some cars were exempt from front plates IE. No mounting point was on the car when originally manufactured, kind of like the no seat belts requirement if the car didn't come with them.

Which leads me to my second question, did the 57 come with a place to mount a front license plate from the factory? I see a lot of cars on here without a front license plate.

I know in Washingto state you are only given a rear classic plate for your classic car, that's what I have on my restored Chevy Nova! My 57 Chevy has a plate centered low on the front bumper from Oregon from when I purchased it from original owner, it's one of my resto projects! From the cars shows I've been at here in Oregon the classics don't have front plate like Washington! Check with your DMV, each state has its own rules on it!

Most States require two plates but you should confirm.... also most LE will let you pass being an old car unless your being stupid and it will be just one more thing to their list of items you need to fix....

There is a bracket for the front bumper to attach the front license plate.

Here in Oregon, a front plate is not required IF one chooses to get a special classic plate. There is a one time fee and the plate never expires or needs stickers. (no more fees) However, if one chooses a standard or personalized plate, 2 plates have to be displayed, and recurring fees required.
When I lived in Utah, I also had antique plates that never expired, but two had to be displayed. Each state is different.

It does vary, state to state, and you go by the laws of the state it's registered in. There was holes in the original bumpers but some aftermarket bumpers don't have them. My smoothie bumper didn't have holes so I improvised.

PA is one rear plate. you can also register the car as an antique and obtain antique plates, or for an additional fee, you can register as an antique and run a year of manufacture plate.

Stock OEM front bumper on a 57 (and most after market but as Don noted, not all of them) have two holes in the front center section to attach a front license plate bracket.

They will write you a ticket for No Front Plate. ( NFP )

If you register your car as an antique in Texas, they give you only one antique plate, BUT if you register it as an antique with year-of-manufacturer plates, they require 2 plates. Go figure.

Thanks for clearing that up Tom. I live in Oregon too, and never checked the letter of the law on front vintage plates. I only run the rear plate and was always a little nervous around LEO's.

A little confused on what plate you actually have. The antique plates where only one is issued has an "SP" followed by a assigned number.
Do you have a year of manufacture set of plates, or standard Oregon plates?
If they issued two plates, you have to display both. I you were issued a "SP" plate, they only gave you one which is all that's required.

I think it was $66, plus a $24 plate fee.
Our regular registration fee for cars and trucks, regardless of value, is $86.00 for two years, and except in Portland or Medford, no smog inspection is required (Or safety)
I would suggest contacting your local DMV. I know there are antique plates issued in Colorado on vehicles that are a certain age, but I don't know the restrictions or fees.

O.K. I'm still illegal...I have original YOM plates, but I only display the rear plate. I have the front plate inside the trunk.

Yup, Maine and NH have a two plate requirement. Funny, when I bought the car the previous owner had a USA plaque on the front and he was from Maine. The LEO I believe give you some leeway on the old and cool stuff.

I'll probably put the front plate on or end up getting one of the hidden retractable plate systems like I had on another car. I just thought antique cars might be exempt, like the seat belt thing.
