Chevy 1956 straight 6 engine - Do I have to remove the engine to replace the 2 front motor mounts or could I just set the engine on a jack and replace it that way or do I have to use an engine hoist? Don't have an engine hoist.

If i`m not mistaken i think you can jack up one side at a time and replace the rubber bushings.

If you have the jack centered, then you can do both sides at once. you will have to at least loosen the opposite mount to get the motor high enough to clear the bracket. 
I have replaced them before by just jacking the engine up. I used a board under the pan so I didn;t dent the pan with the Floor jack.
