Hi,
Just curious about what brand of glass packs has the best old school sound for a small block, Cherry bombs, smittys or ?

I always liked the Cherry Bombs myself. Never had any of the others so I can't remark on them. The Bombs always had a really cool sound to them, especially after they started to burn out inside.

Learned a long time ago that if you mount them up close to the headers they burn pretty quick, and the motor gets louder after only a short time. Mount them further back and they last a lot longer, but the sound always stays a bit too muffled to me.

Thrush - the woodpecker

I remember 44 years ago, when i got my 57, the car had a pair of long Thrush glasspacks on the original 283 power pack motor. Remember the thrush wood pecker?

Later I installed a complete exhaust with the blue Walker Continental glass pack mufflers. I was happy with the sound of both, but both are long gone now.

Currently I have 2.5 ram horns and the muffler shop's "turbro" mufflers on the car and while not glass packs, they sound good to me---but my ears ring all the time now and I have a hard time hearing what my wife or any soft voiced female says

Yep, I do remember the woodpecker. The shop where I had the exhaust system replaced installed Turbo mufflers on the 56 and they have a high picthed tinnie sound to them, though it does sound good when you punch it.They are a problem when you go through a fast food place and you can't hear the speaker to order. Looking forwards to trying out the smithy's.

Since we are talking about glass packs, as a sponsor of this forum, I would be remiss in at least not mentioning our M80's ;)

304 stainless, the matting inside will not burn out like the old glass packs and the price is very fair.

If someone wants to test them out and report back to the members, shoot me a PM for a special price.

I have never seen Smittys with a 3.5 inch inlet/oulet. I have a set of the long ones on my 54 Olds and really like them. I was a little disappointed they leaked along the seam. They have not burned out much in the 3 years they have been on the car. They do have a very nice mellow sound.

Here's where I found them. Mooneyes in Santa fe Springs Ca.

The world's oldest performance muffler, Smithy's has been around since the twenties!

It has got the original "glasspack" sound that we all grew up hearing and still sounds cool today.
3 1/2" opening ends on each side with the same original looking finished cases only by Smithy's.

Please note: Smithy's mufflers are sold as each.
Please select the appropriate length:
3.5" Open ends 22" x 2" XSM3010
3.5" Open ends 26" x 2" XSM3011
3.5" Open ends 30" x 2" XSM3012
