Okay, my 57 Townsman Station Wagon has been having a fuel issue. I thought it was vapor lock, but then I was thinking it maybe the sending unit. I'm trying to figure out if I will have to drop the gas tank to install a new sending unit. I got the old unit out (and dropped the float in the tank, but used an endoscope and vacuum hose and got it out) without removing the tank, but I want to know what other people have done. The instructions from Danchuk read to remove the tank to install the new unit. To make things a little bit more interesting, my husband and I replaced the original rear with a Currie 9" rear with disc brakes. I'm beginning to wonder, if I have to drop the rear, if maybe I should just replace the gas tank. I'm trying to fix this situation with a non-pain in the butt fix. Any suggestions? Thanks.

This is what I will try

After reading all the helpful suggestions, I decided to try and install a new sending unit and hope that fixes my problem. I'm going to see if I can do it without dropping the tank (I am a very patient person). I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again.

V8vic - about Vapor Lock

I am replacing the sending unit because my fuel gauge stopped registering too. It just dropped dead. Here's what's been going on...…..the tank is 16.9 gallon; it seems when I would reach about 1/2 a tank, the vehicle would start bucking and stop, acting like it was out of fuel. There was fuel in the filter, fuel in the tank; so, first replaced the mechanical fuel pump; that seems to be working fine; ran okay for a while and then it happened again; so, opened the hood and let the engine cool off and poured some cold water on fuel lines; car started and drove to a gas station and filled tank up (only 6 gallons needed) and drove home. Okay, drove the car about 100 miles and it happened again when going up a hill (and it wasn't a steep hill either). So, problem seems to happen when gas tank is about 1/2 full?? So, this is why I thought maybe it had to do with sending unit and/or float in tank. Your thoughts?
